Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug testing in Walton, Indiana. Whether you need a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair testing, with facilities in all cities across the nation capable of conducting a hair test. A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is typically needed. Hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair testing options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become more common in drug testing. Many employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts prefer a hair drug test over the traditional urine test. Hair follicle tests serve employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and individuals on probation. The main advantage of a hair follicle test is its longer detection window, up to 90 days, collected under supervision, making it nearly impossible to tamper with. However, for assessing drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an instrumental method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a prolonged record of alcohol and other substances by capturing biomarkers within the strands as the hair grows. Collected from near the scalp, hair can effectively provide a detection timeline of up to three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair collections are straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient for transportation.

Obtaining a 1.5-inch segment consisting of around 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation processes. For EtG add-ons and tests exceeding 10 panels, it's best to have 150mg of the sample. We advise using a jeweler’s scale to measure the sample. In cases where scalp hair is missing, a comparable mass of body hair is acceptable. When mentioning head hair, we refer exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key steps in laboratory analysis of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial introduction of a sample into the lab’s system. This phase includes verifying the proper sealing and shipping of the sample, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing additional data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening is a preliminary scan for drugs. Although Screening is an economical way to dismiss drug presence in most cases, any positive screen warrants further confirmation to be considered valid legally. Any samples that are presumptive positives in Screening require further verification.

When a sample shows presumptive positive results during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen for the Extraction stage. In Extraction, drugs are isolated from hair at a significantly lower concentration than with other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), explaining why hair drug screening is one of the most complex methodologies.

Confirming any positive screening outcome is conducted through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory workflow from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated according to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation under ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, compared to urine tests with shorter detection periods.
  • Challenging to falsify: It is exceedingly hard to manipulate a hair drug test, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Reveals historical patterns: It provides insights into drug use trends over time, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs take approximately 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is typically more costly than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the level of drug metabolites found in hair.

Note: While commonly called "hair follicle tests", the examination actually focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
