Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Oxford, Indiana. If you require a hair drug or alcohol screening, Accredited Drug Testing is an expert in hair analysis, with facilities available in cities nationwide for testing. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is needed. Hair analyses can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

Recently, drug testing methodologies have increasingly incorporated hair follicle drug tests. Many employers, judicial bodies, and Substance Abuse professionals are opting for hair drug tests over standard urine analyses. These tests are preferred by organizations with strict no-drug policies, legal systems, and for individuals under probation. The main advantage of hair follicle drug testing is its extended detection period, typically up to 90 days, conducted under supervision, making it hard to tamper with. However, for detecting drug use within the past five days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a significant method for identifying alcohol and drug consumption. By capturing biomarkers within the strands, hair offers an extended historical account of substance use. With collection near the scalp, hair can reveal up to a three-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. It is easy to collect, challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, comprising approximately 200 hair strands (similar to the thickness of a #2 pencil), nearest to the scalp, equates to 100mg, which is optimal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or when testing beyond 10 panels, 150mg is advised. The use of a jeweler's scale is ideal for weighing the sample. In the absence of scalp hair, a comparable amount of body hair can be attained. When referencing head hair, it pertains solely to scalp hair, while body hair includes all other types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Processing Steps

The processing of a drug test result in the laboratory comprises four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the primary integration of a sample into the laboratory system. This step involves confirming the sample's sealing and correct shipping, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and inputting any additional data absent in an electronic chain of custody.

Screening includes an initial swift evaluation for drug abuse substances. Although Screening is cost-efficient in excluding drug usage in most samples, a positive outcome requires confirmation for legal admissibility. Presumptively positive samples from Screening necessitate further confirmation.

In cases where a sample is presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair from the original sample undergoes preparation for Extraction. This process isolates drugs from hair, albeit at lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or saliva), highlighting the complexity of hair drug testing.

Confirmation of positive screening results takes place via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptively positive samples are cleansed before confirmation if necessary. The complete process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed following both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can trace drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Challenging to manipulate: Cheating on a hair drug test is particularly difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical insight: It reveals patterns of drug use over time, not only recent usage.

Challenges:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Higher cost: Hair drug testing generally incurs more expense than alternative methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Often known as "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
