Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Dike, Iowa. Whether you're looking for a hair drug or alcohol test, we're the experts you need. We maintain testing sites across all U.S. cities, ready to conduct hair evaluations. Generally, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches is necessary on the crown or body for testing. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer custom hair analysis options.

Recently, drug tests have increasingly shifted towards hair follicle evaluations. Numerous employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals now favor hair drug tests over traditional urine screening. Hair tests are popular among employers with strict no-drug policies, judicial systems, and probation services. The key advantage of hair tests is their extended detection period, up to 90 days, maintained under watchful collection conditions and hard to manipulate. Nevertheless, for drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has garnered recognition as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By capturing biomarkers in its growing strands, hair can offer a prolonged history of alcohol and other drugs. When taken close to the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol use for up to nearly three months. It is effortless to collect, relatively tough to tamper with, and straightforward to ship.

A 1.5-inch segment of about 200 hair strands (similar to the thickness of a #2 pencil) next to the scalp will yield 100mg, which is the perfect sample size for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advised. We propose measuring the specimen with a jeweler’s scale. If head hair is not an option, a proportionate amount of body hair might be used. When discussing head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types, including facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The principal stages in laboratory processing of drug test results include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary handling of a sample into a laboratory’s workflow. This step ensures the sample was properly sealed and sent, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and wraps up any additional data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening carries out an initial rapid assessment for substances of abuse. Screening offers a cost-efficient method to exclude drug usage in most cases, but a positive result must be confirmed to hold up in court. Samples that are tentatively positive in Screening need further confirmation.

Should a sample show a presumptive positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepped for Extraction. Here, drugs are withdrawn from hair at much lower densities than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), establishing hair drug tests as the most challenging methodology to execute.

Positive Screening results lead to Confirmation via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples suspected to be positive are cleansed before confirmation if necessary. The whole process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, undergoes review under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair recognition and complies with the ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can disclose drug use extending up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that offer a narrower detection range.
  • Hard to falsify: Hair drug tests are challenging to deceive, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical insight: It can demonstrate a drug usage pattern over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to reveal recent consumption: It requires about 5-7 days for substances to surface in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug assessments are typically costlier than alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal growth discrepancies can influence the drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in Dike, IA, has distinct advantages over traditional urine tests. Hair tests provide a more comprehensive detection period and higher reliability. While urine tests may detect recent drug use, hair analysis offers a longer window of detection, capturing substance use patterns over time. The accuracy and dependability of hair testing establish it as a superior choice for thorough substance evaluation.

Extended Detection Window

One of the key benefits of hair follicle testing in Dike, IA, is its ability to detect substance use over an extended period, up to 90 days. This provides employers with a detailed view of an individual's drug history, allowing for more informed decisions. By revealing patterns of drug use, hair testing offers a broad perspective on substance use that's not possible with shorter-term tests.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Dike, IA, the risk of tampering with hair follicle tests is significantly reduced. Hair testing minimizes opportunities for sample manipulation, ensuring trustworthy and irrefutable results. The method's design inherently limits the potential for adulteration, providing clear and reliable outcomes that maintain the integrity of the testing process.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
