Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Montana, Kansas. If you require a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing is proficient in hair testing, with testing locations available in every city across the nation capable of performing a hair test. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the crown of your head or body can be used. Hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other personalized hair testing options.

In recent times, drug testing methods increasingly include hair follicle tests. Numerous employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse experts now mandate hair drug tests rather than conventional urine tests. Employers who enforce strict no-drug-use policies, legal entities, and those on probation prefer hair follicle drug tests. The key advantage of hair follicle testing is its extended drug use detection period of up to 90 days, an observed collection process, and its high resistance to tampering. However, for detecting recent drug use within the past 5 days, urine testing remains the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. This approach utilizes hair to chronicle a prolonged history of alcohol and drug usage by embedding biomarkers within the hair fiber as it grows. When gathered near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection window spanning up to approximately three months for alcohol and other substances. Hair is straightforward to collect, relatively hard to adulterate, and simple to transport.

Securing a 1.5-inch section comprised of roughly 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, deemed the optimal sample for both preliminary tests and confirmations. For EtG, additional screenings, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advised. It's suggested to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent quantity of body hair is acceptable. When we mention head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair pertains to all other hair varieties (such as facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

The four pivotal stages in the lab processing of drug test results comprise Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the preliminary incorporation of a sample into the lab’s system. This phase ensures the sample was sealed and transported correctly, assigns it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any additional data input not fulfilled by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial swift evaluation for substance abuse. Although Screening acts as a budget-friendly mechanism to dismiss drug consumption in the bulk of samples, a positive screen demands confirmation for court admissibility. Samples that are tentatively positive in Screening require further confirmation.

If a sample shows presumptive positivity during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and prepped for Extraction. This stage involves extracting drugs from hair at a notably lower density than in other techniques (e.g., urine or saliva), explaining why hair drug screening is a challenging modality to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positivity are cleansed before confirmation as needed. The complete lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation conforming to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assessments can identify drug use for up to 90 days, contrasting with urine tests, which offer a shorter detection span.
  • Hard to evade: Cheating a hair drug test is notably difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: It can depict a pattern of drug usage over an extended timeframe, rather than just immediate usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of spotting recent use: Detecting drugs in hair takes roughly 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug assessments generally incur higher costs than other testing strategies.
  • Inconsistent results: Elements like hair color and personal hair growth rates can influence the drug metabolites’ concentration within hair.

Note: Although often termed as "hair follicle tests", the actual examination targets the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Montana, KS, hair follicle testing is often considered superior to traditional urine tests. The primary reason is the extended detection window that hair testing offers, which can reveal drug use over up to 90 days. This contrasts with urine tests, which typically detect recent drug use within a much shorter time frame.

Accuracy and reliability are central to the advantages of hair testing over urine tests. While urine tests might offer quick results, they often fall short in detecting longer-term substance use. Hair follicles store evidence of drug use for extended periods, making them less prone to tampering compared to urine samples, offering a more comprehensive overview of an individual's drug use history.

Extended Detection Window

One of the standout features of hair follicle testing in Montana, KS, is its extended detection window. Unlike other testing methods, hair follicle tests can trace back substance use for as long as 90 days. This extended period allows employers to gain a thorough understanding of an individual’s substance use habits.

For employers seeking to ensure a drug-free workplace, this lengthy detection window is invaluable. By utilizing hair follicle tests, employers can make informed hiring decisions based on a comprehensive view of a candidate’s substance use history, far beyond what urine tests can offer.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Montana, KS, hair follicle testing provides a tamper-resistant solution for drug screening. Unlike urine tests, which can be easily altered or substituted, hair tests are incredibly difficult to manipulate. This inherent resistance to tampering ensures that the test results are both reliable and accurate.

For employers and organizations prioritizing security and authenticity, hair follicle tests offer peace of mind. The rigorous collection and testing process minimizes the risk of sample adulteration, delivering results that reflect true substance use history, making it a trusted method for drug screening.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
