Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Sherman, Kansas. Whether you require a hair-based drug or alcohol examination, our testing centers are located in cities nationwide, specializing in such assessments. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body can be sufficient. Hair analyses can target drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer tailored testing options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a preferred method for drug screening. This approach is increasingly demanded by employers, legal entities, and Substance Abuse experts over traditional urine tests. Employers enforcing zero-tolerance policies, judicial systems, and probationary programs value the extensive detection period, up to 90 days, and the secure collection method which makes tampering nearly impossible. Nonetheless, for detecting recent substance use within five days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

The use of hair analysis has gained recognition as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures biomarkers within its strands as it grows, allowing for a prolonged record of substance use. When hairs are gathered near the scalp, they can yield a detection period extending up to three months for drugs and alcohol. Collecting hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and easy to transport.

Gathering a section of hair measuring 1.5 inches with approximately 200 strands (similar to the width of a #2 pencil) near the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is optimal for testing and verification. For EtG assessments, additional tests, and those exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is suggested. We advise weighing the sample on a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is inaccessible, an equivalent body hair sample is acceptable. References to head hair mean scalp hair only, while body hair includes all other types (such as facial or underarm hair).

Process Overview

The drug testing lab procedure consists of four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning marks the initial stage of sample integration into the lab's system. This step includes ensuring the sample is properly sealed and delivered, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any outstanding data input not handled by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary, rapid test for detecting illegal substances. While Screening serves as a cost-efficient method to confirm non-use for most samples, those that test positive require confirmation to hold up in legal proceedings. Any presumptively positive samples in Screening must undergo secondary confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptively positive during Screening, it undergoes further hair extraction from the original specimen for Extraction. In Extraction, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluids), making hair drug testing the most complex method.

Positive results from Screening are confirmed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS analysis. Any samples with presumptive positives undergo a cleansing process before confirmation as necessary. The complete lab procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is conducted under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair certification and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Benefits of hair drug analysis:

  • Extended detection time: Hair analysis can identify drug consumption up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection periods.
  • Tamper resistance: Cheating a hair analysis is significantly difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical overview: Displays patterns of drug usage over time rather than only recent use.

Drawbacks:

  • Inability to identify recent use: Drugs require about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair strands.
  • Expense: Hair analysis is typically pricier than alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and personal growth rates can impact drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Commonly dubbed "hair follicle tests," the evaluation actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
