Process Overview
There are four key stages in processing a drug test result in a laboratory: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.
During Accessioning, the sample undergoes initial processing into the lab’s system, ensuring proper sealing and shipping, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any manual data entry not covered by electronic chain of custody systems.

Confirmation of any positive Screening outcome uses GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives undergo washing as needed before confirmation.
