Employment, Court Ordered, Probation, Family

Providing comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in High Bridge, Kentucky, Accredited Drug Testing is your go-to provider. If your needs include a hair drug or alcohol test, we tailor our expertise in hair testing, with testing centers available across all cities Nationwide to perform these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is required. Hair tests can be conducted for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other customized options.

In recent times, drug testing methodologies have increasingly incorporated hair follicle tests. A hair drug test is now often preferred over a traditional urine test by many employers, courts, and Substance Abuse specialists. Ideal for employers with strict no-drug use rules, courts, and individuals on probation, hair follicle drug tests offer significant benefits: an extended detection period of up to 90 days, observation during sample collection, and a reputation for being hard to manipulate. However, urine tests remain the best for identifying drug use in the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

The application of hair testing has grown to be recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and other drugs by embedding biomarkers in the strands of the developing hair. When taken near the scalp, hair can provide an approximate detection period of up to 3 months for alcohol and other drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, tampering with it is somewhat challenging, and it is easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch section consisting of about 200 hair strands (roughly the size of a #2 pencil) close to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, considered the ideal sample for both screening and verification. For EtG, add-ons, and/or more than 10-panel tests, a 150mg specimen is advised. We suggest weighing the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be collected. When mentioning head hair, we mean scalp hair solely. Body hair pertains to any other hair categories (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four major steps in the lab processing of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the primary processing of a specimen into a lab’s system. This comprises checking the sample was properly sealed and shipped, allotting a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any further data entry missing from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening is a cost-efficient method for excluding drug use in most specimens, a positive screen requires confirmation to be permissible in legal proceedings. Any samples that are presumptively positive in Screening do require a secondary confirmation.

If a specimen is presumptively positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for preparation in Extraction. In this phase, drugs are pulled from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is considered the most complex method to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is carried out via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleaned before confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests have the capacity to detect drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a briefer detection window.
  • Hard to manipulate: It is particularly difficult to manipulate a hair drug test, enhancing the accuracy of the results.
  • Reveals historical usage: It can depict a pattern of drug use over a time frame, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It generally takes about 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests often cost more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Elements such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the test itself examines the hair strand and not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing hair follicle testing to urine tests in High Bridge, KY, it's clear that hair testing offers superior detection accuracy and reliability. While traditional urine tests effectively identify recent drug use, hair testing provides a broader detection window. This allows for the identification of drug use patterns over a much longer period, providing more comprehensive insights.

Employers increasingly favor hair follicle tests due to their resistance to tampering and extended detection timeframe. They grant peace of mind in knowing that these results are difficult to manipulate, distinguishing them clearly from the limitations of urine testing.

Extended Detection Window

In High Bridge, KY, the advantage of hair follicle testing lies in its ability to identify drug use over an extensive duration, typically up to 90 days. This test provides a comprehensive overview of an individual's substance history, which is invaluable for employers aiming to maintain a safe and drug-free workplace.

The hair follicle test's extended detection window equips employers with detailed insights into prospective or current employees' substance use, enabling them to make better-informed decisions. This feature offers a stark contrast to urine tests, which only track recent drug use, providing long-term visibility into past behavior.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle tests in High Bridge, KY, are a tamper-resistant method that significantly reduces the risk of sample adulteration. Unlike urine tests, which are more susceptible to manipulation, hair tests ensure that results remain unquestionably reliable. This feature gives employers confidence in the authenticity of the drug testing process.

The structure of hair follicle testing inherently makes it more challenging to tamper. This reliability in results is crucial for employers seeking dependable evidence of compliance with drug policies, fortifying the testing process integrity.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
