In Carencro, Louisiana, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. Whether you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol screening, our expertise lies in this area, with centers across the country ready to assist. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head's crown or body can be tested. Hair tests can determine the presence of drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored testing solutions.

Lately, the use of hair follicle drug tests has grown more prevalent in drug screening. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts now often prefer hair drug tests to traditional urine tests. This method is chosen by companies with strict drug policies and for probation purposes. A key advantage is its ability to detect drug use up to 90 days prior, which makes it hard to manipulate, though urine tests excel in detecting recent use, within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Utilizing hair tests has increasingly been acknowledged as an effective method for identifying substance and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a lengthy record of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair shaft as it grows. If taken near the scalp, it can reveal substance use spanning up to around a 3-month timeframe for alcohol and other substances. Hair is easy to gather, fairly resistant to tampering, and can be transported without hassle.

A 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 hair strands (roughly the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or examinations beyond 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. We suggest measuring the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't accessible, an equivalent volume of body hair may be used. When we mention head hair, we specifically refer to scalp hair only. All other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.) are classified as body hair.

Process Overview

There are four primary phases in the lab processing of a drug test outcome: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the introductory processing of a sample into a lab's system. This step includes confirming that the sample was properly sealed and sent, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any additional data entry that is not provided by a digital chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial rapid examination for drug misuse. Screening is cost-efficient for ruling out substance use in most samples; however, to be legally acceptable, a positive result must be validated. Samples that show presumptive positives in Screening need further confirmation.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the starting sample and readied for Extraction. During this stage, substances are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is implemented through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives are cleaned before confirmation as required. The entire lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug usage for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Hard to manipulate: It is notably hard to manipulate the results of a hair drug test, enhancing result reliability.
  • Reflects historical usage: It shows a pattern of drug consumption over time, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Unable to identify recent usage: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Aspects like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the test evaluates the hair strand rather than the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing outshines urine testing in Carencro, LA for several reasons. First, hair tests provide a broader detection window, allowing for a history check of up to 90 days. This makes it highly reliable for employers enforcing strict substance policies. Next, hair tests are harder to tamper with, assuring credible results. Compared to traditional urine tests, hair follicle testing offers superior accuracy and security, making it the preferred choice.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing is favored in Carencro, LA due to its extended detection window, covering up to 90 days of an individual's substance use. This lengthy detection period gives employers a thorough overview of an individual's drug use history, crucial for making informed decisions about hiring and retaining employees. With the ability to detect well beyond the limits of urine tests, hair testing is invaluable for long-term substance abuse monitoring.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing in Carencro, LA significantly reduces the chances of tampering, offering secure and reliable results. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
