In Eastwood, Louisiana, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Should you require a hair drug or alcohol test, we specialize in hair analysis and maintain testing locations nationwide, equipped to administer such tests. Typically, samples can be taken from 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the crown or other body parts. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, among other custom options.

Recently, the adoption of hair follicle drug testing has increased. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals are now opting for hair drug tests over traditional urine analysis. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, along with courts and probation services, prefer hair follicle tests. The key advantage of these tests is a longer detection period of up to 90 days, collected under supervision, rendering it nearly tamper-proof. However, urine tests are still preferred for recent drug use detection within a 5-day window.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has become recognized as an effective instrument for identifying substance and alcohol use. It provides a comprehensive timeline of alcohol and drug usage by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of hair strands as they grow. When obtained near the scalp, hair can offer around a 3-month detection period for substances. Hair is easy to collect, relatively hard to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, which is the ideal amount for both screening and confirmation purposes. For EtG, additional tests, and/or those exceeding 10 panels, a sample of 150mg is advised. It is suggested to use a jeweler's scale to weigh the hair sample. In instances where scalp hair is not accessible, a comparable quantity of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, we refer specifically to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The core phases in the lab process for a drug test result consist of Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary processing of a sample into a lab's system. It involves verifying that the sample is properly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing extra data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of a preliminary rapid check for substances of abuse. While Screening is an economical method to exclude drug use for the majority of samples, a positive result in screening requires confirmation to be acceptable in legal proceedings. Any samples that test presumptive positive during Screening must undergo further confirmation.

If a sample shows presumptive positivity during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. In this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to execute.

Positive screening results are confirmed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are washed before confirmation if necessary. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is conducted under the scrutiny of both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for as long as 90 days, in contrast to urine tests, which have a shorter detection span.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating on a hair drug test is highly challenging, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Tracks usage history: It provides an insight into drug usage patterns over time, rather than only recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent use: Drugs typically become traceable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are usually pricier than other testing methods.
  • Result variations: Elements such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth might influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although often named "hair follicle tests", the analysis is performed on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Eastwood, LA, hair follicle testing triumphs over urine tests through a variety of benefits. It offers enhanced detection capabilities and accuracy, providing more reliable results over time. Unlike urine tests, hair testing can detect drug use over extended periods, making it a superior method for thorough substance abuse insights.

The advantages of hair testing over urine testing cannot be overstated. Hair follicle tests prove to be less vulnerable to tampering and offer a broader scope of detection. This approach captures a more comprehensive picture of an individual’s substance use history, reaffirming its dominance as a drug testing method in Eastwood, LA.

Extended Detection Window

Employers in Eastwood, LA, are opting for hair follicle tests due to their extended detection window. Capable of identifying drug use up to 90 days prior, these tests provide a far-reaching overview of an individual's substance habits. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
