In Red Chute, Louisiana, Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug tests. We specialize in hair assessments for drug and alcohol detection, providing nationwide centers, including locally, to carry out these tests. Typically, hair from the crown or body is used, requiring about 1.5 to 2 inches. Options include detecting drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing solutions.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have risen in popularity over traditional methods. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts are favoring hair tests instead of urine tests. These tests are ideal for zero-tolerance environments, probation scenarios, and judicial requirements due to their extended detection window of up to 90 days, observed collecting process, and resistance to tampering. However, for detecting drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain unmatched in accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Utilizing hair testing is seen as an efficient approach for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a historical record of substance use by capturing biomarkers within the hair strand as it grows. Collecting hair near the scalp allows for detection capabilities of up to about three months for substances like alcohol and other drugs. The process of hair collection is straightforward, poses challenges for tampering, and is easily transportable.

A 1.5-inch sample consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) taken from the scalp will yield a 100mg specimen, which is optimal for both screening and confirmation tests. For additional testing such as EtG, expanded panels, or beyond 10 panels, it is advisable to obtain 150mg of the specimen. We advise using a jeweler's scale for weighing the specimen. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be utilized. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The procedure for processing a drug test result in the laboratory encompasses four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

The Accessioning stage involves the initial incorporation of a sample into the laboratory's system. This includes verifying proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any necessary data entry not supplied by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening provides an initial quick evaluation for substances of abuse. While Screening offers an economical way to eliminate drug usage for most samples, a positive result requires confirmation for legal acceptability. Samples showing presumptive positivity in Screening necessitate secondary validation.

If Screening indicates a presumptive positive, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, substances are extracted from hair at lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), resulting in hair drug screening being the most complex methodology.

Positive Screening results undergo Confirmation via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptively positive samples are washed before Confirmation as needed. The complete lab process from Accessioning through Confirmation is reviewed under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection timeframe: Hair tests can identify drug usage for a period of up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which offer a shorter detection period.
  • Highly reliable: The hair drug test is notoriously difficult to manipulate, ensuring more accurate outcomes.
  • Provides usage patterns: It offers insight into drug usage trends over time, as opposed to solely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapability of detecting recent use: It typically takes 5-7 days for drugs to appear in hair.
  • Higher costs: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier compared to other methods of drug testing.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Though often labeled as "hair follicle tests", this testing process targets the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
