In Palmetto, Louisiana, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. Our specialty in hair testing is supported by nationwide testing centers equipped to conduct these tests. For most scenarios, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is required. Hair tests can be tailored to detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific substances.

Hair follicle testing has gained popularity for drug testing, often preferred by employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals over traditional urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, as well as court systems and probationary arrangements, now favor hair tests. These tests offer a longer detection window for drug use, up to 90 days, with observation during collection, making them nearly foolproof. However, when screening within the last 5 days, the urine test remains the most reliable.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as a formidable method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair serves as a repository of alcohol and drug use by encapsulating biomarkers within the fibers of the expanding hair strand. When harvested near the scalp, it can offer a detection timeframe extending up to three months for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively challenging to tamper with, and simple to dispatch.

A 1.5-inch portion comprising approximately 200 hair strands (akin to a #2 pencil's thickness) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We suggest utilizing a jeweler’s scale for specimen measurement. Should scalp hair be unavailable, a proportional amount of body hair may be gathered. References to head hair denote solely the scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types including facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The key stages of laboratory handling for a drug test result encompass Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the preliminary handling of a sample within a laboratory framework. This stage ensures the sample was appropriately sealed and dispatched, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any supplementary data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Whilst Screening is a cost-effective strategy to dismiss drug use in most cases, a positive result necessitates confirmation for court admissibility. Any samples that yield a presumptive positive in Screening require further confirmation.

Should a sample yield a presumptive positive at the Screening level, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. This stage involves extracting drugs from hair at concentrations much lower than those in other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug analysis the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptively positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation as necessary. The comprehensive laboratory procedure from Accessioning through Confirmation is vetted under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug analyses can identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a shorter timeframe.
  • Hard to falsify: It is extremely challenging to falsify a hair drug test, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Yields historical insights: It can illustrate a pattern of drug use over time, not merely recent activities.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Detection in hair necessitates about 5-7 days post-drug use.
  • Expense: Hair drug assessments are typically costlier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Aspects such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests," the actual analysis is of the hair strand, not the scalp-embedded follicle.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Palmetto, LA, hair follicle testing surpasses traditional urine tests, offering enhanced detection accuracy and reliability. Hair tests can identify drug use across a broader timeframe, capturing up to 90 days of drug history compared to the limited window of urine tests. This comprehensive coverage helps employers make informed decisions by evaluating long-term substance use patterns.

The advantages of hair follicle testing are evident in its ability to detect a range of substances with a higher precision than urine tests. While urine tests are effective for spotting recent drug use, hair tests provide a full year of insight, reducing the chance of false negatives and ensuring more trustworthy results.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Palmetto, LA, offers an extensive detection window, tracing back up to 90 days of drug use history. This long-term visibility provides employers with an in-depth understanding of an individual's substance habits, which is invaluable for assessing potential risk factors during hiring or monitoring current employees.

The extended detection period of hair follicle testing gives employers a strategic advantage. By revealing substance history over three months, it provides a more comprehensive profile of drug use than shorter-term tests. This foresight empowers companies to make sound decisions regarding employee safety and compliance.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Palmetto, LA, hair follicle tests dramatically lower the risk of sample tampering, offering results that are reliable and indisputable. This test method ensures the authenticity of samples, making it virtually impossible to alter or adulterate, thus delivering trustworthy outcomes for all drug screening needs.

Hair follicle testing stands out as a fraud-resistant method, crucial in safeguarding the integrity of drug testing results. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
