This entails checking that the sample is suitably sealed and transported, assigning it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and entering any data not captured by an electronic chain of custody system.
Screening provides a preliminary assessment for the presence of drugs. Though efficient for eliminating drug use in many samples, a positive outcome from the initial screen must be verified to hold up in legal settings. Any samples flagged as potentially positive at this stage require further confirmation.
Should a sample test potentially positive during Screening, more hair is retrieved from the original sample for Extraction. During this stage, drugs are drawn from hair at a much lower concentration level compared to other methods such as urine or oral fluid analysis, underscoring the complexity of hair drug analysis.
Verification of any affirmative screening results takes place through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples identified as potentially positive undergo washing before confirmation, as necessary.
