Accredited Drug Testing offers extensive hair follicle drug testing in Casnovia, Michigan. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol screening, our expertise lies in hair testing, with facilities spread across all cities nationwide to conduct such tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head or body can be used. Hair tests can be tailored to analyze drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific testing needs.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has gained popularity as a method for drug detection. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts increasingly demand hair tests over traditional urine ones. Hair follicle tests are favored by employers with strict anti-drug policies, courts, and those on probation. Their main advantage is a longer detection window, lasting up to 90 days, with detection under observation and minimal chance of tampering. However, for drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the more precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair captures a prolonged record of alcohol and drug consumption by embedding biomarkers in the strands of the hair as it grows. When gleaned near the scalp, hair can offer a detection range of up to around 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and effortlessly shippable.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches from approximately 200 hair strands (equivalent to a #2 pencil's thickness) adjacent to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimum sample size for testing and corroboration. For EtG, additional analysis, and/or panels exceeding 10, a sample of 150mg is advisable. It is suggested to use a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. Should scalp hair be unavailable, a proportionate quantity of body hair can be used. The term head hair pertains solely to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other hair varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key stages in the laboratory process for drug test outcomes involve Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

In Accessioning, the sample undergoes initial processing into the lab's system. This step confirms proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and concludes any extra data entries absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary rapid check for drug abuse. While cost-efficient for eliminating drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed to be court-valid. Any presumptively positive samples from Screening necessitate additional confirmation.

Should a sample be presumptively positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the initial collection and prepped for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (ex. urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing especially challenging.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS approaches confirm any positive screen results. All presumptive positive samples undergo pre-confirmation washing if needed. From Accessioning to Confirmation, the lab process adheres to both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests with shorter detection periods.
  • Hard to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely difficult, contributing to more precise outcomes.
  • Offers longitudinal data: It can reflect a trend of drug use over time, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect immediate use: Drugs become discernible in hair in roughly 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to cost more than alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Variances like hair color and personal hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Though commonly called "hair follicle tests," the analysis actually examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in Casnovia, MI, outperforms urine testing by offering superior detection accuracy and dependability. Unlike urine tests, hair follicle analysis provides extended detection capabilities, making it a more effective choice for employers seeking thorough substance use history of their candidates or employees.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
