Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Oakley Park, Michigan. Should you need a drug or alcohol hair test, look no further than Accredited Drug Testing–our experts in hair testing are available nationwide. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is necessary for testing. Hair analysis can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer specialized testing solutions.

In recent years, hair follicle drug tests have become an increasingly popular method for conducting drug tests. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse professionals are opting for hair drug tests instead of traditional urine tests. Hair tests are especially favored by employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and individuals under probation. The significant advantage of hair follicle testing is its extended detection window, typically up to 90 days. Moreover, samples are collected through an observed process, reducing chances of cheating. Nevertheless, urine tests remain the most accurate for detecting recent drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Seen as a robust method for detecting drug and alcohol intake, hair testing captures a long-term record of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the strands of hair as they grow. When collected near the scalp, hair samples can reveal substance use over roughly a 3-month span. Hair collection is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of approximately 200 strands (roughly the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the preferred quantity for screening and verification. For EtG, additional analyses, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale to measure the specimen is recommended. If scalp hair isn’t available, a corresponding quantity of body hair can be collected. When mentioning head hair, we are specifically referring to scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug test laboratory workflow comprises four key phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample is initially processed into the lab’s system. This step includes ensuring the sample's integrity through proper sealing and shipping, assigning an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and entering any additional data not captured by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs an initial rapid assessment for drug presence. It is a cost-efficient method to eliminate drug use in most samples; however, a positive screen needs further confirmation to be court admissible. Any samples that test positive in Screening require a subsequent confirmation step.

For samples preliminarily positive in Screening, extra hair is derived from the original sample for Extraction. In this stage, drugs are drawn from hair at lower concentrations compared to methods like urine or oral fluid tests, which makes hair drug screening the most challenging technique to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result utilizes GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that tested positively in preliminary Screening are washed before Confirmation as needed. The entire lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is validated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify substance use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a more restricted timeframe.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is quite tough, ensuring more reliable outcomes.
  • Offers historical insights: It shows a drug use pattern over an extended period, not merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: A period of about 5-7 days is needed before drugs are visible in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is often costlier than other testing strategies.
  • Result variability: Variances like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: The term "hair follicle tests" is a misnomer as the analysis targets the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
