What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective tool for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Through the trapping of biomarkers in the fibers of the growing hair strand, hair can provide a long-term history of alcohol and other drugs. When taken near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of up to about three months for alcohol and other drugs. Hair is easy to gather, hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 hair strands (roughly the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the ideal sample volume for screening and confirmation tests. For EtG, extra tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample is recommended. If scalp hair is not available, the same amount of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, we refer specifically to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four primary steps in processing a drug test result in the lab: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial incorporation of a sample into the lab's system. This step includes ensuring the sample was sealed and sent correctly, granting a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any needed data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary quick examination for drugs of abuse. While Screening is an economical method to exclude drug usage in the majority of samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation for court admissibility. Any samples presumed positive in Screening require secondary confirmation.

If a sample is deemed presumptively positive during Screening, more hair is taken from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are removed from hair at a significantly lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting why hair drug screening is the most challenging methodology to conduct.

Confirmation of a positive screening outcome is approached through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, all samples assumed positive undergo washing as necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to review under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, which is longer than the detection window of urine tests.
  • Challenge to deceive: Tampering with a hair drug test is extremely challenging, thus enhancing result accuracy.
  • Provides historical insight: It can chart drug use patterns over an extended timeframe, beyond just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent use: Drugs take about 5-7 days to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual growth differences can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Frequently termed "hair follicle tests," the test examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Compared to standard urine testing, hair follicle evaluations offer a more robust assessment in University, MS. Hair testing reveals longer detection windows, capturing drug use history more effectively over time. Unlike urine tests that often cover a shorter span, hair tests provide a broader view, enhancing their reliability in assessing substance use.

Hair testing provides a defense against manipulation, as the method is resistant to common tampering tactics associated with urine tests. Its increased accuracy ensures employers are grounded on solid data when making critical decisions. The superiority of detection accuracy establishes hair follicle tests as a trusted choice amongst various testing methods.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in University, MS is renowned for its extensive detection window. Able to detect substance use up to 90 days prior, it offers a comprehensive overview of an individual's substance habits. This prolonged detection capability allows employers and authorities to grasp a more complete history of usage, beyond what may be captured by other testing methods.

This extended detection period aids in revealing patterns of use, which is crucial for informed decision-making. Employers benefit by ensuring their teams operate in a safe, drug-free environment while fully understanding an employee's substance history. This broad overview helps mitigate potential risks associated with substance use in the workplace.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing stands as a notable method in University, MS due to its tamper-resistant nature. The risk of sample adulteration is significantly minimized, providing reliable results under stringent conditions. The innate difficulty to alter or substitute samples strengthens the integrity of the testing process.

This reliability promotes confidence for employers relying on hair tests for accurate substance detection. Without the susceptibility to common tampering tactics seen in other methods, it ensures results remain unchallenged, producing trustworthy outcomes integral to maintaining drug-free environments.
