Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Dover, Missouri. For hair drug or alcohol testing needs, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair examinations, with facilities ready for testing in every city Nationwide. Typically, hair lengths of 1.5 to 2 inches are required from the head or body. Hair assessments can examine drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored to specific testing needs.

Over recent years, conducting drug tests increasingly involves hair follicle analyses. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts now favor hair drug tests over the conventional urine assessments. Hair follicle drug examinations are favored by employers adhering to absolute drug-free mandates, courts, and probationary individuals. Their key advantage is the extended detection span, usually covering up to 90 days, with observed sample collection making tampering nearly impossible. Yet, when checking for drug use within the last five days, urine tests remain the precise choice.

What it is, How it works

Hair assessments have become regarded as an effective instrument for monitoring drug and alcohol consumption. Through capturing biomarkers in the fibers of the growing hair strand, hair offers an extensive record of alcohol and other substances. When obtained near the scalp, hair can furnish a detection timeframe of up to roughly three months for alcohol and various drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and easily transported.

A sample of 1.5 inches containing about 200 hair strands (roughly the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the preferred sample for both screening and confirmation procedures. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, it is advised to utilize 150mg of the specimen. We recommend using a jeweler’s scale to gauge the specimen’s weight. If scalp hair is absent, a comparable volume of body hair may be collected. When we mention head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (e.g., facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug testing laboratory process consists of four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial handling of a sample into a laboratory’s framework. This step ensures the sample is properly sealed and dispatched, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any supplementary data entry not recorded by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs an initial rapid evaluation for substances of abuse. Screening is a cost-efficient method for discounting drug usage in most samples, but a positive screen necessitates confirmation to be legally acceptable. Samples that show presumptive positivity in Screening require additional confirmation.

If a sample shows presumptive positivity during Screening, more hair is extracted from the original specimen for Extraction. Drugs are then extracted from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which highlights why hair drug screening is the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening results utilizes GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All presumptive positive samples undergo a washing process before confirmation as needed. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and aligns with ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a shorter detection period.
  • Resistance to manipulation: Cheating a hair drug test is notably challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Chronological data availability: Hair tests can display a pattern of drug consumption over time, rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: It takes roughly 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs than other testing methodologies.
  • Result variations: Variables such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although frequently termed "hair follicle tests", the actual analysis focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
