Accredited Drug Testing provides efficient hair follicle drug testing services in Emden, Missouri. For those requiring a drug or alcohol hair test, our expertise lies in this domain, with centers located nationwide for convenience. A hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches is necessary, with body hair as an alternative. Our tests offer analysis for drugs, alcohol/ETG, along with tailored testing solutions.

Over recent years, the preference for conducting drug tests has seen a shift towards hair follicle testing. Various entities, including employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts, opt for hair tests over urine tests. With robust zero-tolerance policies, employers, courts, and probation managers favor hair tests. These tests boast a prolonged detection window of up to 90 days, ensure supervised sampling, and are difficult to manipulate. However, urine tests remain superior for detecting recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective method for detecting the use of drugs and alcohol. Hair retains a long-term record of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair strand as it grows. When gathered near the scalp, hair offers a detection window for alcohol and drugs of up to approximately three months. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transmit.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches containing around 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) situated closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample amount for both initial screening and subsequent confirmation. For EtG testing, additional panels, and/or screenings above 10 panels, it is suggested to use 150mg of the specimen. We advise using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. If scalp hair is not accessible, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be gathered. It should be noted that when referencing head hair, we mean scalp hair only. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result follows four main steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning consists of the initial integration of a sample into the lab’s system. This involves verifying that the sample was adequately sealed and transmitted, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any additional data entry that an electronic chain of custody system has not supplied.

Screening entails a preliminary check for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is an economical method for excluding drug use in most samples, a positive result from Screening must be confirmed to be valid in a court of law. Any samples with a presumptive positive result in Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are drawn from hair at a concentration substantially lower than found in other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which contributes to hair drug screening being the most complex method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive results from Screening is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that test presumptively positive are washed before confirmation, as necessary. The comprehensive lab process from Accessioning through to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and in compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to deceive: It is notably challenging to cheat a hair drug test, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Offers historical insight: It can reveal a timeline of drug use over a prolonged period, beyond just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot reveal recent use: There is an approximate delay of 5-7 days before drugs are traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically more costly than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Despite often being termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually involves the hair strand rather than the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
