Offering comprehensive hair follicle drug screening in Hunnewell, Missouri, Accredited Drug Testing is your go-to for both hair drug and alcohol tests. Experts in this testing method, we have centers in every city across the nation ready to conduct the tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is required. Results can reveal drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a more prevalent method. Many employers, legal bodies, and substance abuse experts favor hair tests over the traditional urine tests. Employers dedicated to zero-tolerance policies, as well as courts and probation systems, rely on these. Its edge lies in detecting drug use for up to 90 days, conducted in a monitored setting, making it very challenging to falsify. However, for usage within the most recent 5 days, urine tests still offer the highest precision.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective means for detecting the intake of drugs and alcohol. Hair retains lasting evidence of these substances by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand. With samples taken near the scalp, it can show a detection window of up to around 3 months for various substances. Hair collection is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch snippet of roughly 200 hair strands (similar to the girth of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the preferred sample for assessments and confirmations. For EtG, extended tests, or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of hair is advisable. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the hair is suggested. In instances where scalp hair is unavailable, a comparable quantity of body hair may be utilized. By head hair, we mean scalp hair specifically. Body hair encompasses other hair forms (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug testing result process in the lab includes four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample is initially processed into the lab’s system. This phase involves confirming the sample's sealed condition and correct shipping, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling further data entry tasks absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

In Screening, a preliminary assessment for drug abuse is performed. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug consumption for the majority, any positive screen results must be verified to hold up in legal proceedings. Presumptive positive samples in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

Should a sample show a presumptive positive outcome during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepped for Extraction. Here, drugs are drawn from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), illustrating the challenging nature of hair testing methodology.

Positive screening results are confirmed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if needed. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is subject to oversight under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug testing can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter timeframe.
  • Hard to manipulate: It is exceedingly challenging to deceive a hair drug test, leading to more accurate outcomes.
  • Provides usage history: The tests can map drug consumption patterns over time, beyond just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent consumption: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately after 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Variables such as hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Even though widely termed as "hair follicle tests", the assessment targets the hair strands and not the follicles beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
