Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in Jasper, Missouri. If you're seeking a hair alcohol or drug test, we specialize in hair evaluation, with facilities available nationwide that can conduct these tests. Generally, having 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head or body is necessary. Hair assessments are capable of testing for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored hair testing solutions.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has increasingly become a method of choice over traditional urine testing. Employers, judicial entities, and Substance Abuse specialists often prefer a hair analysis. Employers enforcing zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and probationary individuals widely utilize this test. Its chief advantage is an extended detection window, identifying drug use up to 90 days and offering a secure, witnessed collection process, making it virtually tamper-proof. However, for drug use within the last 5 days, urine testing remains the definitive option.

What it is, How it works

Hair evaluation is recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a lasting record of alcohol and drug biomarkers within the strands' fibers as they grow. Captured near the scalp, hair can offer about a three-month window for detecting alcohol and drug usage. It's easy to gather, tough to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A cluster comprising 1.5 inches of around 200 hair strands (similar to a #2 pencil in diameter) from near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the perfect sample for analysis and verification. For EtG, additional tests, or panels exceeding ten, 150mg of the specimen is advised. It is advisable to weigh the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If head hair is not an option, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. When discussing head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair pertains to all other hair categories (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The lab processing for drug test results comprises four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning deals with the initial processing of a sample into a lab's procedure. This step involves confirming that the sample was correctly sealed and dispatched, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and recording any needed data not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary rapid assessment for substances of abuse. While being an economical means to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be validated to be legally valid. Any samples that are tentatively positive in Screening must undergo a subsequent confirmation.

Should a sample test tentatively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screen outcome is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples testing tentatively positive are washed prior to verification as necessary. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is inspected following both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests ascertain drug intake up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a limited detection range.
  • Hard to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is highly difficult, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Offers trend analysis: It provides drug utilization patterns over time, beyond just recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent intake: Drugs take roughly 5-7 days post-consumption to show in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is typically costlier than alternative test methods.
  • Result variances: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the examination assesses the hair strand and not the follicle below the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
