Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Vandalia, Montana. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol assessment, our expertise in hair testing, along with our nationwide sites, ensures a hair test can be conducted. At least 1.5 to 2 inches of hair, whether on your crown or body, is typically required. These tests can assess for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair testing solutions.

Recently, drug testing often incorporates a hair follicle test. Numerous employers, courts, and substance abuse experts are favoring hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. This method is employed by employers with zero-tolerance policies on drug use, courts, and individuals on probation. A key advantage of hair testing is its extended detection period, usually up to 90 days, collected during an observed procedure, making it nearly foolproof. Yet, for drug use within the last five days, urine tests remain the precise choice.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has increasingly been regarded as an effective approach for identifying usage of drugs and alcohol. Hair offers an extensive timeline of drug and alcohol presence by embedding biomarkers within its strands. When taken near the scalp, hair can provide a detection timeframe of up to roughly three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is effortless, relatively tamper-resistant, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch portion consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the preferred sample size for screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or assessments beyond ten panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. We advise weighing the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is inaccessible, a comparable amount of body hair may be obtained. When mentioning head hair, we mean scalp hair specifically. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory process for a drug test consists of four principal phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning covers the initial handling of a specimen into a lab’s system. This involves ensuring the sample was correctly sealed and shipped, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any missing data entry not included in an electronic chain of custody procedure.

Screening performs an initial rapid evaluation for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is an economical approach to eliminate drug usage on most samples, a positive result requires verification to be court-admissible. Samples that show a presumptive positive in Screening necessitate a follow-up confirmation.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial supply and readied for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at far lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluids), which is why hair drug assessment is the most complex methodology to conduct.

Verification of positive screening outcomes is achieved via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positives undergo washing before confirmation if required. The complete laboratory sequence from Accessioning through Confirmation is scrutinized under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection duration.
  • Resistance to manipulation: Hair drug tests are notably difficult to tamper with, enhancing result reliability.
  • Historical insights: They offer a comprehensive view of drug usage over time, not just recent exposure.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing generally incurs greater costs compared to other drug testing methodologies.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair pigmentation and personal hair growth variations can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is performed on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
