In Bruning, Nebraska, comprehensive hair follicle drug tests are provided by Accredited Drug Testing. For those requiring tests for drugs or alcohol, we are the specialists, with testing facilities available across various cities Nationwide. Typically, hair from the crown or elsewhere on the body is suitable, provided it's 1.5 to 2 inches. Our hair tests detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer other specialized options.

Lately, the prevalence of hair follicle drug testing has seen a rise. It is becoming the go-to method over standard urine tests for countless employers, courts, and substance abuse authorities. Ideal for workplaces enforcing zero-tolerance, courts, and probation scenarios, hair tests boast a longer detection period of up to 90 days and are nearly impervious to tampering. Still, for recent drug use, urine tests remain the gold standard in accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a lengthy historical account of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. When taken near the scalp, hair can reveal up to a three-month detection period for alcohol and other drugs. Hair is straightforward to gather, relatively challenging to fake, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment from about 200 strands of hair (roughly the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels beyond ten, a 150mg sample is preferred. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to measure the specimen. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent amount of body hair is acceptable. "Head hair" specifically refers to scalp hair only, while "body hair" encompasses all other types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result includes four main steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial entry of a sample into a laboratory system, ensuring the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any necessary data entry missed by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening conducts an initial scan for substances of abuse. While Screening is a cost-efficient way to eliminate drug use in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation to be valid in legal proceedings. Samples that show positive in Screening must undergo a secondary confirmation.

Presumptive positive findings from Screening prompt further hair extraction from the initial sample for the Extraction process. Drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluids), making hair drug testing one of the most complex methodologies.

Confirmation of any positive screening results is performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples testing positive are cleansed before proceeding to confirmation as needed. Every laboratory phase from Accessioning to Confirmation is critiqued under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 standard accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a shorter detection scope.
  • Challenging to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is notably difficult, enhancing the accuracy of the results.
  • Offers behavioral trends: It tracks drug use patterns over time, beyond recent habits.

Limitations:

  • Limited recent detection: Drug appearance in hair takes approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to cost more than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Often called "hair follicle tests", the test actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Bruning, NE

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
