Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Deshler, Nebraska. If you require a hair drug or alcohol assessment, we specialize in hair tests and offer services nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body are necessary. Hair analysis can reveal drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has gained popularity. Numerous employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts now prefer hair tests over urine ones. Hair tests are favored for their extended detection span, lasting up to 90 days, and their incorruptible nature. However, for recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain unparalleled.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is widely regarded as a crucial method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a long-term record of drugs and alcohol by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When hair is sampled near the scalp, it can reveal up to a three-month window of alcohol and drug usage. Hair collection is straightforward, tampering is challenging, and shipping is convenient.

A 1.5-inch section of roughly 200 strands (similar in thickness to a #2 pencil) near the scalp delivers 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of the sample is advisable. It is suggested to measure the sample using a jeweler's scale. Should there be no scalp hair, an equivalent amount of body hair may be obtained. The term "head hair" specifically denotes scalp hair, while "body hair" encompasses all other types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The main stages of laboratory processing in a drug test result encompass Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample undergoes initial integration into the lab's system. This process verifies proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and ensures any additional data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system is completed.

Screening provides a preliminary rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Though Screening is a cost-effective method to exclude drug usage for most samples, a positive screen needs subsequent confirmation for court admissibility. Any samples indicated as presumptively positive in Screening require further confirmation.

Presumptively positive samples in Screening lead to additional hair being extracted from the original sample for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are retrieved from hair at much lower concentrations than other methodologies (such as urine or oral fluid); thus, hair drug screening is particularly challenging.

Positive screening results are confirmed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed prior to the necessary confirmation. The entire laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, undergoes review according to both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • The detection span is long: up to 90 days of drug use can be identified by hair drug tests, whereas urine tests offer shorter detection periods.
  • It is challenging to cheat on a hair drug test, thereby enhancing accuracy.
  • Allows for historical data: This test provides a timeline of drug use, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Recent usage is undetectable: Drugs typically become detectable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variations exist: Differences like hair color and individual hair growth patterns can influence metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Commonly labeled as "hair follicle tests," the examination is of the hair strand, not the follicle under the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
