Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Chester, Nebraska. If a drug or alcohol test via hair sampling is required, Accredited Drug Testing excels in this domain, and our testing facilities are available in all cities nationwide to conduct such tests. Generally, individuals need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the crown of the head or body for the test. Hair testing can check for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

Recently, the shift towards hair follicle drug tests in drug testing procedures has increased. Instead of traditional urine tests, many employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts now choose hair drug tests. These tests are preferred by employers with strict drug-free policies, courts, and for those on probation. The main advantage of hair follicle tests is their extended period of drug detection, up to 90 days, collected through observed procedures and nearly resistant to tampering. However, to detect drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests still remain the most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Utilizing hair analysis has emerged as a formidable method for identifying the use of drugs and alcohol. This technique offers an extended timeline of substance use by capturing biomarkers within the hair's structure as it grows. Hair samples taken from near the scalp can reveal drug and alcohol consumption for a period extending up to three months. The collection process is straightforward, tampering is relatively challenging, and samples are simple to transport.

Obtaining a sample measuring 1.5 inches and consisting of about 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) from the scalp will yield approximately 100mg, which is the standard amount necessary for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional testing, or panels exceeding ten types, 150mg of hair is advised. It is suggested that the specimen's weight is verified using a jeweler's scale. In scenarios where scalp hair is not obtainable, an equivalent quantity of body hair is acceptable. "Head hair" is specifically referred to as "scalp hair," while "body hair" encompasses all other varieties (such as facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

The series of procedures in a lab setting for processing drug tests is broken down into four stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the groundwork of logging a sample into a lab's records. This step entails confirming if the sample was sealed and transported correctly, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and handling any remaining data entries not managed by an electronic custody chain system.

The Screening step carries out a preliminary analysis to detect abuse drugs. Although Screening provides a cost-efficient means to dismiss drug presence for most samples, any positive outcome must be validated for suitability in legal settings. Samples indicating preliminary positivity during Screening must undergo further Confirmation.

When a preliminary positive is found during Screening, a further portion of hair from the original sample goes through Extraction. During this phase, drugs are isolated from the hair at far lower concentrations than other testing methods (such as urine or oral fluid), thus making hair drug analysis the most complex procedure to execute.

Confirmation of any positive findings from Screening is accomplished using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS technologies. Any samples with presumed positivity are cleansed prior to Confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair certification along with compliance to ISO / IEC 17025 benchmarks.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug analyses can identify substance use for up to 90 days, whereas urine analyses have shorter detection durations.
  • Hard to manipulate: Altering the results of a hair drug analysis is very challenging, ensuring higher accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: It shows the history of drug consumption over time, rather than just immediate usage.

Limitations:

  • Lacks recent detection: Drugs require around 5-7 days before becoming traceable in the hair.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug analyses incur higher costs compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Differences such as hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence the drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", the procedure assesses the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
