Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Hardy, Nebraska. For individuals requiring a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise lies in hair testing, with centers available in cities nationwide to conduct these tests. Typically, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head, though body hair is an option. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair testing options.

In recent times, drug testing methodologies increasingly favor hair follicle tests. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals often prefer hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Employers with strict anti-drug policies, judicial systems, and probation officers use these tests. A key advantage is the extended detection period, reaching up to 90 days, with a supervised collection method, making it tough to manipulate. However, for detecting recent drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain superior.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective means for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. By capturing biomarkers within the fibers of growing hair, hair offers a prolonged record of substance use. When taken from near the scalp, hair can reflect substance use history for a duration of up to three months. It is straightforward to gather, relatively tamper-proof, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section containing about 200 hairs (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimum quantity for both preliminary screening and detailed confirmation. For tests involving EtG, add-ons, and/or panels exceeding 10, a sample of 150mg is suggested. We advise using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair is unavailable, a corresponding volume of body hair may be used. References to head hair pertain specifically to scalp hair, whereas body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The fundamental steps of laboratory drug test processing include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into the lab’s system. This process includes checking that the sample was sealed and delivered correctly, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry that an electronic chain of custody system may not provide.

Screening consists of a preliminary swift screening for substance abuse. Although Screening is an economical approach to exclude drug consumption in most samples, a positive screen must be verified to be legally valid. Samples that show presumptively positive results during Screening must undergo secondary confirmation.

In cases where a sample shows a presumptive positive result during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction phase. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at concentrations lower than that found in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most complex methodology to carry out.

To confirm any positive results from screening, GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods are utilized. All samples that are presumptively positive undergo cleansing prior to confirmation when necessary. The complete lab procedure, from Accessioning through Confirmation, is audited according to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditations.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection duration: Hair drug assessments can identify drug use for as long as 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is exceedingly challenging, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Historical usage data: It reveals a trend of substance use over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect current use: It requires around 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug assessments generally cost more than other methods of drug testing.
  • Result variability: Attributes like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Often termed "hair follicle tests", these tests evaluate the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
