Delivering comprehensive hair follicle drug evaluations in Pleasantville, New Jersey is Accredited Drug Testing's forte. If hair drug or alcohol analysis is what you need, our focus is hair diagnostics, with facilities in every city Nationwide equipped to execute tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair are necessary from your head or body. Hair assessments can check for substances, alcohol/ETG, or cater to specific testing needs.

Recently, drug testing procedures have increasingly included hair follicle analysis. Employers, judiciary, and Substance Abuse specialists often require hair tests over the traditional urine analysis. For employers enforcing strict drug-free policies, judiciary systems, and probationary individuals, hair tests are advantageous. They offer a prolonged detection window of approximately 90 days, are conducted under supervision, and are nearly impossible to tamper with. However, urine testing remains preferable for recent substance detection within a 5-day frame.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol use. Hair strands offer a prolonged record of substance use by capturing biomarkers within their fibers as they grow. When gathered near the scalp, hair can reveal substance usage within roughly a 3-month time frame. It’s straightforward to collect, tough to tamper with, and convenient to send.

Collecting a 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 hair strands (akin to the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for both screening and verification. For EtG, additional analyses, and/or examinations exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advised. It is suggested to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. In the absence of scalp hair, a similar amount of body hair can be used. Scalp hair specifically refers to hair from the head, whereas body hair encompasses all other hair kinds (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of drug test results encompasses four primary phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial input of a sample into a lab’s system. This step involves confirming the sample was sealed and transferred correctly, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and executing any supplementary data entry not included by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening conducts an initial rapid assessment for substance abuse. Although Screening offers a cost-effective method to identify the majority of non-using samples, a positive result requires confirmation for legal validation. Any samples that preliminarily test positive during Screening necessitate follow-up confirmation.

When a sample preliminarily tests positive in Screening, extra hair is separated from the existing sample for Extraction. This process extracts drugs from hair at a notably lower concentration than alternative methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing a challenging methodology.

Confirmation of any positive Screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All initial positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if needed. The overall lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use up to 90 days, while urine tests cover a shorter timeframe.
  • Highly resistant to tampering: Hair drug tests are difficult to cheat, enhancing result reliability.
  • Reveals usage patterns: It shows a historical pattern of substance use that goes beyond recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Lacks recent use detection: It takes about 5-7 days before drugs can be identified in hair.
  • Higher expense: Hair drug tests generally incur more costs compared to other methods.
  • Result variability: Variables like hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Despite being commonly called "hair follicle tests", these tests analyze the hair strand and not the hair follicle situated under the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
