Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screenings in Port Republic, New Jersey. Whether you require tests for drugs or alcohol, we are proficient in hair analysis, with test sites available across the entire nation, all ready to conduct the hair tests you necessitate. Typically, you should have between 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your scalp, with body hair alternatives available if needed. Hair analysis can determine the presence of drugs, EtG alcohol, or bespoke hair test configurations.

In recent years, the preference for conducting drug divisions has increasingly emphasized hair follicle testing. An increasing number of employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse consultants are mandating this method over traditional urine tests. Organizations implementing zero-tolerance drug policies, judicial authorities, and probation services primarily employ hair follicle diagnostics. A significant advantage of this technique is the protracted timeframe during which drug use can be discerned—often extending to 90 days. These analyses are carried out under supervision and are notoriously challenging to deceive. However, for detecting drug consumption within the immediate past five days, urine testing remains unsurpassed.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a robust approach for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged historical record of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within the growing hair strand's fibers. When procured near the scalp, hair can offer a detection timeframe of up to about 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A hair sample measuring 1.5 inches with approximately 200 strands (roughly the girth of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the preferred sample size for analysis and validation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of the sample is advised. It is suggested to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be gathered. References to head hair signify only scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair forms (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary procedures in the lab processing of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial incorporation of a sample into a lab's system. This comprises validation of the sample's seal and proper shipment, allocation of a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and the completion of any supplementary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial rapid examination for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-effective method to dismiss drug use in most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation for legal admissibility. Any samples preliminarily positive in Screening require further confirmation.

In cases where a sample is presumptively positive in the Screening stage, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepped for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at a significantly lower concentration than in alternate methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is among the most challenging methodologies to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positive results undergo washing prior to confirmation if necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes evaluation under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 criteria.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a limited detection period.
  • Hard to falsify: It is very challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Supplies historical insights: It can reveal a drug use pattern over time, not merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting immediate use: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to become visible in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result fluctuations: Variables like hair color and personal differences in hair growth may influence the drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Though often called "hair follicle tests," the analysis is conducted on the hair strand and not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
