Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Seven Springs, North Carolina. If you require a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise is in hair testing, with facilities across all cities nationwide ready to conduct your hair test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is needed. Hair tests can check for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other custom hair testing options.

Over the years, hair follicle drug tests have become a more common method for drug testing. Frequently requested by employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals, these tests are preferred over standard urine tests. They are chosen by employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and individuals on probation. The major advantage of hair follicle tests is their longer detection window, typically up to 90 days, through an observed collection process, which is nearly impossible to manipulate. However, urine tests are more accurate for detecting recent drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now regarded as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged timeline of substance usage by encasing markers within the strands of growing hair. Collected near the head, hair may reveal a detection period of around three months for drugs and alcohol. Hair collection is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and convenient for transportation.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, containing roughly 200 hair strands (similar to a #2 pencil), obtained from the scalp, will produce 100mg of hair, ideal for examination and validation. For EtG, additional samples, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advisable. It's suggested to weigh the specimen on a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be absent, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. When discussing head hair, it pertains only to scalp hair. Body hair represents all other varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Overview of the Procedure

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial handling of a sample within a laboratory's workflow. This includes validating the proper sealing and delivery of the sample, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any further data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening constitutes an initial, swift assessment for substances of abuse. Even though Screening is a cost-efficient strategy to negate drug consumption in most samples, a positive screening must be verified to be valid for legal proceedings. Any samples that test presumptively positive during Screening need secondary verification.

Should a sample test presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is sourced from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. During this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at a significantly lower density than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), hence hair drug screening is among the most complex methodologies.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is undertaken using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Samples presumed positive are cleansed before confirmation if necessary. The entire laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards certification.

Benefits of Hair Drug Testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assessments can identify substance use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine assessments with a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Challenge to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is quite arduous, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Displays historical trends: It reveals a timeline of drug consumption, rather than just recent usage.

Drawbacks:

  • Inability to detect immediate use: It takes roughly 5-7 days for substances to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug assessments generally carry higher costs than alternative methods.
  • Outcome variability: Variables such as hair hue and individual hair growth differences can influence the drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the skin.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing hair testing to traditional urine testing in Seven Springs, NC, hair tests outperform in accuracy and reliability. Unlike urine tests, hair follicle testing has a longer detection period, providing a superior assessment of drug use. This method offers an enhanced level of certainty for employers and administrative bodies.

Extended Detection Window

The extended detection window of hair follicle testing in Seven Springs, NC, is a key advantage, monitoring drug use for up to 90 days. This comprehensive timeline allows employers to gain an in-depth view of a person’s substance use history, aiding in informed decision-making for employment and management.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
