In Kinston, NC, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. If you're seeking a hair-based drug or alcohol test, our expertise in hair testing is unmatched, with testing centers in cities nationwide ready to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body are needed. Our hair tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored testing options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a more prevalent method in drug testing. Various employers, legal institutions, and substance abuse experts prefer hair tests over urine tests. These tests are ideal for zero-tolerance workplaces, judicial systems, and individuals on probation. A significant advantage is the extended detection timeline, up to 90 days, with an unobtrusive collection process that's highly tamper-resistant. However, for recent drug use (last 5 days), urine tests are the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as a robust method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended history of substance intake by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair strand. When gathered near the scalp, hair can reveal up to roughly a three-month detection window for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to gather, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch section containing about 200 hair strands (around the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is preferred. We advise weighing the specimen on a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent amount of body hair may be collected. When mentioning head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The four key stages in the laboratory handling of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial processing of a sample into a laboratory’s system. This checks that the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any extra data entry not offered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary swift examination for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is an economical approach to rule out drug usage in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation to be admissible in court. Any samples with presumptive positives in Screening need a secondary confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and prepped for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), thus making hair drug screening the most complex methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is carried out via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation as necessary. The end-to-end laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can trace drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection window.
  • Hard to falsify: It is notably difficult to cheat a hair drug test, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Offers historical insights: It can reveal a pattern of drug use over a duration, rather than immediate use only.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect initial use: Approximately 5-7 days are needed for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests generally incur higher expenses compared to other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can impact the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: While commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the examination itself targets the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Kinston, NC, hair follicle testing surpasses traditional urine tests in several ways. While urine tests can detect recent drug use, hair tests offer a much broader detection window and are difficult to cheat. The superior accuracy of hair testing provides a more reliable analysis, making it essential for employers and organizations looking to maintain a drug-free environment effectively and confidently.

Extended Detection Window

The extended detection capability of hair follicle testing provides Kinston, NC employers with a more comprehensive view of an individual's drug history. Able to identify substance use up to 90 days back, this test is invaluable for understanding long-term patterns and supporting informed hiring or retention decisions. It offers invaluable insights that urine tests can't match, allowing for a more informed evaluation.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Kinston, NC, hair follicle tests offer a robust defense against sample adulteration. The difficulty in tampering with a hair sample translates to reliable, unquestionable results. This integrity makes hair testing an essential tool for discerning substance presence, setting it apart as a superior drug screening method against potential manipulation, providing peace of mind through consistent accuracy.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
