Offering thorough hair follicle drug assessments in Skedee, Oklahoma, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair testing services nationwide. Tests are available in many cities, provided hair length on the head is 1.5 to 2 inches, with body hair as an alternative. Hair analyses can reveal drugs, alcohol, or bespoke testing needs.

Growing in popularity, hair follicle drug tests are now employed more than ever for screening. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts prefer it over typical urine tests. Hair testing is favored in policies mandating zero drug tolerance, probation oversight, and other applications. The test's advantage is its extended detection time of up to 90 days and the difficulty of tampering, although urine tests prove more effective for recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and other drugs by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair growing out. When cut near the scalp, hair can offer nearly a 3-month window for detecting alcohol and other drugs. Hair is straightforward to collect, not easily tampered with, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches composed of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable in size to a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal specimen size for examination and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. We suggest measuring the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, a comparable quantity of body hair can be used. When discussing head hair, we mean scalp hair only. Body hair refers to all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory process for a drug test result consists of four main steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial processing of a sample into a lab’s system, encompassing verification that the sample was sealed and shipped correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary rapid check for substances of abuse. Though Screening is a budget-friendly method to rule out drug use for most samples, a positive screen must be verified to be legally valid. Any samples that are preliminarily positive in Screening must undergo a secondary confirmation.

Should a sample be preliminarily positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for the Extraction process. At this stage, drugs are extracted from hair in considerably lesser concentrations than other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), a reason why hair drug screening is notably challenging.

Confirmation of any positive Screening outcome is carried out through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, presumptive positive samples are cleansed as needed. The entire laboratory progression from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, while urine tests have a briefer detection window.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is very difficult, ensuring more precise results.
  • Offers historical insights: It can reveal a pattern of drug use over time, not solely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent usage: It takes approximately 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are generally pricier than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: While commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually targets the hair strand rather than the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
