Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screenings in Anita, Pennsylvania. Specializing in hair drug and alcohol tests, our centers are nationwide, ready to conduct them. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body suffices for most screenings. Our hair tests can target drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored assessments.

Hair follicle drug tests have become a preferred method, adopted increasingly by employers, courts, and Substance Abuse specialists over urine tests. Employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and probationers are opting for hair drug tests. Unlike urine tests, hair follicle tests offer a longer detection window of up to 90 days, are observed during collection, and are almost tamper-proof. However, for detecting recent drug use (last 5 days), urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is widely regarded as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By encapsulating biomarkers within the fibers of a maturing hair strand, hair offers a comprehensive record of alcohol and drug use. When sampled near the scalp, it can offer a detection period of up to around 3 months for substances. Hair is straightforward to gather, relatively hard to alter, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment containing roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil in thickness) closest to the scalp yields 100mg, the optimal amount for assessment and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or assessments beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. Using a jeweler’s scale, we suggest weighing the sample. If scalp hair is not accessible, an equivalent amount of body hair could be obtained. When we mention head hair, it pertains exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other kinds (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary procedures in laboratory processing of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the preliminary processing of a sample for a laboratory's system. This encompasses verifying proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entries absent from an electronic chain of custody setup.

Screening serves as an initial swift verification for substances of abuse. While screening is a cost-efficient strategy to rule out drug consumption for most samples, any positive result requires confirmation to stand in legal proceedings. Samples that are preliminarily positive in the screening necessitate further confirmation.

When a sample is initially positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is obtained from the initial sample and slated for Extraction. This step involves extracting drugs from hair at much lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), underscoring why hair drug screening is the most challenging approach to undertake.

Any positive result in screening undergoes confirmation via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are pre-washed before confirmation if deemed necessary. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation along with ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which cover a shorter span.
  • Hard to manipulate: Hair drug tests are difficult to falsify, enhancing the reliability of the results.
  • Chronological insight: They can reveal a drug use pattern over time, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It takes roughly 5-7 days for drugs to manifest in hair strands.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically more costly than other testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth variances can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", the evaluation is conducted on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
