Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in McSherrystown, Pennsylvania. If a hair or alcohol test is required, we excel in hair analyses, with facilities in every major city nationwide capable of administering these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair are needed from the scalp or body for accurate analysis, permitting examination for substances such as drugs or alcohol/ETG through tailored testing solutions.

Lately, hair follicle drug testing has become a preferred method in substance assessments. Many employers, judicial systems, and addiction experts are opting for hair-based tests over typical urine tests. This method is favored by companies with zero-tolerance drug policies and is also used by courts and probation officers. One key advantage of hair testing is its extensive detection window of up to 90 days, collected under supervision, making it nearly foolproof. Nevertheless, for detecting recent drug use (within the past 5 days), urine tests remain superior in accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a prolonged history of alcohol and drug exposure by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. When gathered near the scalp, hair can yield a detection period of up to three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to collect, challenging to tamper with, and uncomplicated to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches consisting of roughly 200 strands of hair (comparable in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for testing and verification. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or assays exceeding 10 panels, it is advisable to collect 150mg of the specimen. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. If scalp hair is not available, a comparable quantity of body hair may be used. When referencing head hair, we mean scalp hair only. Body hair refers to all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key stages in the laboratory processing of a drug test outcome involve Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial handling of a sample within a laboratory’s system. This step encompasses verifying the proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and executing any further data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial rapid assessment for drug abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient approach to dismiss drug usage in the majority of samples, a positive result requires confirmation for it to be valid in court. Samples that are preliminarily positive during Screening need a follow-up confirmation.

For a sample that is preliminarily positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. In this stage, drugs are extracted at lower concentrations than in other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening one of the most challenging methodologies to execute.

Positive screening results undergo Confirmation using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. All initially positive samples are cleaned before confirmation as necessary. The entire laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the validation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection period: Hair drug tests can indicate drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have shorter detection durations.
  • High resistance to deception: It is very difficult to falsify a hair drug test, thus ensuring more precise results.
  • Offers historical insights: It can reveal patterns of drug use over time, not merely recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair only after around 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically more costly than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although commonly known as "hair follicle tests", these tests analyze the hair strand, not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in McSherrystown, PA, outshines traditional urine tests by providing more comprehensive substance detection. While urine tests focus largely on recent drug use, hair testing offers a broader detection spectrum, uncovering usage patterns over a longer timeline. Its heightened accuracy and reliability are critical for environments that require stringent drug policies.

Compared to urine tests, hair follicle testing's extended detection period highlights its superiority. Employers can rely on these tests to furnish a detailed perspective of an individual's substance history, ensuring high compliance standards. The robust accuracy in detecting various substances enhances the credibility of test outcomes, elevating trust in the results.

Extended Detection Window

The hair follicle testing offered in McSherrystown, PA, stands out due to its extensive detection period of up to 90 days. This long window is crucial for employers seeking to understand the comprehensive substance use history of potential candidates or current employees. Such expansive coverage is unmatched by other testing methods.

Employers gain significant insight from the extensive detection capabilities of hair follicle tests. By capturing a detailed timeline of usage, these tests afford a deeper understanding of an individual's interaction with substances, enabling employers to make informed hiring and management decisions that align with workplace safety and compliance standards.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle tests in McSherrystown, PA, substantially reduce tampering risks, unlike other testing methods. The collection process is meticulously observed, making it extremely binding and difficult to alter outcomes. This robustness equips employers with trustworthy and genuine results critical for an uncompromising drug-free work environment.

The resistance against manipulation is a hallmark of hair follicle testing. By minimizing potential adulteration, these tests provide a formidable defense against tampering, promoting integrity and accuracy in test outcomes. In settings where drug testing authenticity is paramount, this method's tamper-proof nature becomes an invaluable asset.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
