Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle testing services in Exeter, Rhode Island. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise lies in hair testing. Our nationally located centers can conduct these tests. Hair typically needs to be about 1.5 to 2 inches on the head, but other body hair can be used too, allowing drugs, alcohol/ETG, or custom testing options.

Increasingly, hair follicle drug tests are becoming the preferred method for drug screening in recent times. Employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals are shifting towards this method as opposed to traditional urine tests. Employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and probationary supervision often utilize hair testing. The key advantage is its extended detection window, reaching up to 90 days, through observed collection, making cheating quite difficult. For detecting recent drug use, typically within 5 days, urine tests still offer the best accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has been recognized as a robust method for detecting drug and alcohol intake. Hair strands capture biomarkers within their fibers, providing a historical record of substance use. A sample taken near the scalp can reveal alcohol and drug usage for about three months. This method is straightforward to collect, hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample size of 1.5 inches, containing around 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) near the scalp, provides 100mg of hair, which is optimal for testing. For specific cases like EtG tests or panels exceeding 10, a quantity of 150mg is suggested. It's advised to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, a comparable amount of body hair can be used. 'Head hair' specifically refers to scalp hair, while 'body hair' encompasses other types like facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory process for determining drug test results includes four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample undergoes initial processing within the lab's system. This step checks that the sample is properly sealed and shipped, assigns a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishes any additional data entry that an electronic chain of custody system doesn't cover.

Screening is a preliminary assessment for substance abuse. While Screening quickly eliminates drug use for the majority, a confirmed positive is needed for legal validation. Samples testing presumptively positive in Screening require confirmatory verification.

If a specimen appears positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is taken for Extraction. Here, drugs are withdrawn from hair at considerably lower levels than in other methods (like urine or oral fluid), making hair analysis the most challenging method to implement.

To validate any positive screening outcomes, techniques such as GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS are utilized. Before confirmatory testing, all presumptive positives are cleansed as necessary. The entire procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, undergoes evaluation according to the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and holds ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can trace drug use back 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter windows.
  • Resistance to tampering: Hair drug tests are difficult to manipulate, enhancing accuracy.
  • Historical insights: Records usage patterns over time, not merely recent drug intake.

Limitations:

  • Cannot reveal recent use: Drugs become traceable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair analysis tends to cost more than alternative testing methods.
  • Result fluctuations: Hair color and growth variations can affect drug metabolite concentrations.

Note: Though often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing surpasses urine tests in Exeter, RI. It ensures superior accuracy and dependability in detecting substance use. The extended detection range offers substantial benefits over traditional urine methods.

Unlike urine tests, hair follicle assessments minimize the chances of false negatives. The consistent reliability of hair tests makes them crucial for maintaining drug-free policies.

Extended Detection Window

In Exeter, RI, hair follicle testing provides an unparalleled extended detection window, reaching up to 90 days back into an individual’s drug usage history. This enables businesses to have a detailed view of an applicant or employee's substance use background.

Employers gain insight from the in-depth detection capability, helping make informed hiring and management decisions. The extended period validates the comprehensiveness of the hair follicle testing method.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing, prominent in Exeter, RI, stands as a robust defense against tampering. Its method of collection and analysis leaves little room for sample manipulation.

By diminishing the risk of adulteration, hair follicle tests offer results that are trustworthy and irrefutable. This boosts employer confidence in the integrity of testing outcomes.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
