Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Warwick, Rhode Island. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, Accredited Drug Testing is an expert in hair testing, with testing centers available nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the head's crown or body hair may be used. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer tailored hair testing choices.

Recently, drug testing often includes a hair follicle drug test. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts prefer hair tests over traditional urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and those on probation utilize hair follicle drug tests. Key advantages of this test include detecting drug use for up to 90 days, an observed collection process, and minimal cheating risks. Nonetheless, for detecting drug use in the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as an effective means for detecting alcohol and drug use. The strands of hair, while growing, encase biomarkers, offering a prolonged retrospective view of substance usage. When gathered near the scalp, hair can reveal alcohol and drug use over an approximately 90-day span. Hair samples are straightforward to collect, hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

To obtain an optimal sample for testing and confirmation, a 1.5-inch snippet comprising around 200 strands of hair (roughly the width of a #2 pencil) from near the scalp yields 100mg, which is ideal. For EtG, additional requests, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing. In cases where scalp hair is absent, a comparable amount of body hair is suitable. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory analysis for drug testing encompasses four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the first step, ensuring the proper integration of the sample into the lab’s system. This involves confirming the sample’s seal and shipment integrity, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and recording any further data that isn’t captured by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides a preliminary assessment for drug presence. While it efficiently excludes drug use in most samples, a positive screening result needs confirmation for legal acceptability. Presumptive positive results in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

Should a Screening indicate a presumptive positive, additional hair is extracted from the sample to prepare for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are isolated from hair concentrations much lower than those found in urine or oral fluid, marking hair drug analysis as particularly challenging.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methodologies are employed to confirm any screening-positive outcomes. Before confirmation, all presumptive positive samples undergo washing if required. From Accessioning to Confirmation, the lab process is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests with a briefer detection period.
  • Hard to deceive: The accuracy of hair drug tests is higher due to the difficulty in falsifying results.
  • Records usage patterns: It offers insights into habitual drug usage rather than only recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair only after 5-7 days.
  • Expense: The cost of hair drug testing is generally higher compared to other methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Warwick, RI, hair follicle tests surpass urine tests in detection accuracy and reliability. Hair tests provide a detailed view over a more extended period, unlike urine tests that are limited in scope and detection range.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
