In Manville, Rhode Island, Accredited Drug Testing offers extensive hair follicle drug testing. Our expertise in hair analyses extends nationwide. For a valid test, your hair should measure between 1.5 to 2 inches, whether from the crown or elsewhere. Hair samples can be tested for substances, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become more commonplace over traditional methods. Employers, legal bodies, and Substance Abuse experts prefer these tests due to zero-tolerance policies. The main advantage of hair tests is their ability to detect substances over a 90-day period, with the collection being highly observable to prevent cheating. Despite this, for the most recent 5-day usage detection, urine tests still hold the edge.

What it is, How it works

Utilizing hair testing has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair strands capture a historical account of substances by embedding biomarkers within the hair's growing fibers. When obtained near the roots, hair samples can offer a detection timeframe of up to three months for substances. Collecting hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to send.

A segment measuring 1.5 inches consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (equivalent to a #2 pencil thickness) closest to the roots yields around 100mg - the optimal amount for both initial and confirmatory analysis. For EtG, additional parameters, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of sample matter is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for specimen measurement. If head hair is not obtainable, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. When discussing head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. All other hair refers to body hair, including facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory workflow for processing a drug test consists of four key phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary stage where a sample is registered into the lab’s database. This involves verifying the seal and shipment of the sample, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing additional data entry absent from electronic chain-of-custody systems.

Screening entails an initial, brief assessment for substances of misuse. Although screening is economical for eliminating drug presence in most samples, a positive outcome requires validation for legal admissibility. Samples indicating a positive during screening must undergo further confirmation.

Should a sample show a presumptive positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial collection and readied for Extraction. During Extraction, substances are isolated from hair at significantly reduced concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), highlighting the complexity of hair drug analysis.

Confirmation of any positive screening is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, all presumptive positives are cleansed as required. The comprehensive lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can reveal drug consumption up to 90 days, in contrast to the shorter detection window offered by urine tests.
  • High resistance to manipulation: Evading a hair drug test is exceedingly challenging, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Records usage trends: Hair testing provides insight into drug usage habits over a timeframe, rather than simply indicating recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent consumption: Drugs require approximately 5-7 days to become traceable in hair samples.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs compared to alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal hair growth differences can alter the drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Despite frequent references as "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair shaft, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
