Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in East Providence, Rhode Island. For those needing a hair-based drug or alcohol check, Accredited specializes in this testing, with centers across all U.S. cities prepared for hair analysis. A requirement is 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown, or other body hair may suffice. Assessments cover drugs, alcohol/ETG, along with tailored testing options.

Recently, methods for drug testing have increasingly incorporated hair follicle analysis. Many companies, legal systems, and addiction specialists now prefer hair testing over the traditional urine evaluation. Employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, or individuals under probation utilize this method. The key advantage is its extended detection window of about 90 days, conducted under supervision, making it difficult to compromise, though urine tests remain best for detecting recent drug use in the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a lasting record of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair strand as it grows. When taken from the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of up to about 3 months for substances like alcohol and drugs. It's easy to collect, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient for transportation.

A 1.5-inch length consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg, which is optimal for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or panels exceeding 10, a 150mg sample is preferable. We advise using a jeweler’s scale for precise measurement. In cases where scalp hair is absent, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. Head hair specifically refers to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses other types of hair (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory process for drug testing involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary integration of a sample into the lab’s system. This step ensures the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any necessary data entry that’s missing from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary, rapid evaluation for drug usage. Though Screening is a budget-friendly method to exclude drug presence in most samples, a screen showing positive results must undergo Confirmation to be valid in court. Presumptive positive results from Screening require a subsequent confirmation.

If Screening indicates a presumptive positive, additional hair from the original specimen is collected for Extraction. During this process, drugs are isolated from hair at a much lower concentration than found in other methods (for instance, urine or oral fluid), highlighting the complexity of hair drug testing.

Confirmation of any positive result from Screening is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, all samples showing presumptive positives are appropriately washed. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning through Confirmation is conducted under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and complies with ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Benefits of hair drug analysis:

  • Prolonged detection period: Hair analysis can determine substance use up to 90 days prior, unlike urine tests which have a briefer duration.
  • Challenging to manipulate: Hair drug tests are hard to tamper with, enhancing accuracy.
  • Historical insights: Hair tests reveal a pattern of drug use over time, not just immediate usage.

Drawbacks:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: There is a delay of about 5-7 days before drugs are traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Generally, hair tests are costlier compared to other testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Drug metabolite concentration in hair can be influenced by factors like hair color and individual growth rates.

Note: Often termed "hair follicle tests", these assessments actually evaluate the hair strand, not the underlying follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing surpasses urine tests in East Providence, RI, offering clear advantages. Accuracy and reliability are central benefits, as hair exams capture a broader range of drug use over time. Unlike urine screenings, which only reveal recent use, hair tests trace usage history, making them ideal for comprehensive evaluations.

Employers seeking thorough reviews prefer hair tests for their extended detection window. Cheating becomes nearly impossible, ensuring integrity in results, a growing demand among employers, courts, and professionals in substance abuse treatment.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing provides an unmatched ability to detect drug use over a lengthy period, up to 90 days, in East Providence, RI. This method offers employers valuable insights into an individual's substance history beyond the limitations of shorter detection methods like urine tests.

Employers benefit from an extended view into an applicant's or current employee's substance habits. This thorough review capability aids in making informed decisions, mitigating workplace risks comprehensively.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In East Providence, RI, hair follicle drug tests serve as a tamper-resistant solution, minimizing the risks of sample adulteration. Conducted under supervised conditions, they ensure the authenticity and reliability of every test.

The security of hair tests is critical in delivering irrefutable results. Alternatives like urine tests are more susceptible to manipulation, whereas hair testing upholds validity and accuracy, supporting trustworthy outcomes.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
