Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Fort Lawn, South Carolina. If a hair drug or alcohol assessment is needed, our expertise lies in hair testing, with centers available in every city nationwide to conduct hair assessments. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body will suffice for testing. These hair analyses can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or cater to other tailored hair testing requirements.

In recent years, hair follicle drug tests have become a more prevalent method for substance analysis. Employers, courts, and addiction specialists are increasingly favoring hair tests over traditional urine methods. Hair drug screenings are critical for employers with zero-tolerance policies, judicial systems, and probation officers. A key advantage is the extended detection period of nearly 90 days, collected under supervision, making them tamper-free. However, for drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows, hair offers a prolonged history of alcohol and drug intake. When taken near the scalp, the hair can reveal a detection period of up to three months for alcohol and other drugs. The collection process for hair is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and easy to transport.

Collecting a sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil), near the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is optimal for screening and confirmation. For EtG, supplemental analyses, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, it's advised to gather 150mg of the sample. We recommend using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen. If scalp hair isn't available, a comparable amount of body hair may be gathered. When mentioning head hair, we refer exclusively to scalp hair; body hair encompasses all other types (like facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

The sequence of laboratory processing for drug test results includes four primary phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial phase where a sample is entered into a lab’s system. This phase makes sure the sample was correctly sealed and dispatched, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any supplementary data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs an initial rapid assessment for substances of abuse. Although Screening serves as a cost-efficient technique to eliminate drug use on most samples, any positive result necessitates confirmation for court acceptability. Samples rendering a presumptive positive in Screening mandate further confirmation.

When a sample registers a presumptive positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is retrieved from the primary sample and readied for Extraction. In this process, drug compounds are extracted from hair in much lesser concentrations than other approaches (such as urine or oral fluids), illustrating why hair drug screening proves more intricate to conduct.

Any positive Screening result's verification is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All samples indicating a presumptive positive undergo cleaning prior to Confirmation as necessary. The complete lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair qualification and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assessments identify drug use up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests with shorter detection durations.
  • Hard to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is significantly difficult, leading to more precise outcomes.
  • Reports historical usage: This test reflects drug usage patterns over time, not just immediate consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting latest use: It requires about 5-7 days for drugs to be perceivable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug assessments are typically more costly than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair pigment and personal differences in hair growth can affect drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests," this examination actually evaluates the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
