Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Liberty Hill, South Carolina. If you're seeking a hair-based drug or alcohol exam, Accredited Drug Testing excels in providing such services, with facilities in numerous cities nationwide equipped to conduct hair analyses. Typically, a length of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body suffices for the process. Hair assessments can be tailored to detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other options.

Recently, drug testing methods increasingly incorporate hair follicle analysis. A growing number of companies, legal systems, and substance abuse experts favor a hair test over the conventional urine test. Hair tests are preferred by organizations enforcing strict anti-drug policies, judiciary systems, and probation monitoring. The main advantage of hair follicle testing lies in its extensive detection window for substance use, usually lasting up to 90 days, which is collected under direct supervision, thus minimizing the possibility of tampering. However, urine tests remain the most precise for detecting drug use within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as an effective means to detect consumption of drugs and alcohol. Hair captures a historical record of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within the hair strand fibers as they grow. When obtained near the scalp, hair can cover a detection span of up to about three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and convenient for transportation.

A 1.5-inch segment made up of roughly 200 hair strands (approximating the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the preferable sample for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen weighing 150mg is advisable. We suggest weighing the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't accessible, a similar quantity of body hair is an alternative. “Head hair” specifically pertains to the scalp hair. “Body hair” encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the beginning step where a sample is entered into a lab’s system. This step includes confirming the sample was received in a sealed and proper state, assigning it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any missing data entry not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary inspection for drug presence. While Screening efficiently excludes drug use in most samples, any screen result indicating a positive must be confirmed for court acceptability. Samples that are presumptive positives at the Screening stage require a secondary confirmation analysis.

If a sample shows presumptive positivity during Screening, more hair is collected from the initial sample for the Extraction step. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration compared to other methodologies (e.g. urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is the most challenging to carry out.

Any positive Screening result undergoes Confirmation with GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples indicating presumptive positivity are cleansed before confirmation if required. The whole lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is overseen in accordance with both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests look at a much shorter detection span.
  • Hard to falsify: It’s very challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, ensuring more accuracy in results.
  • Supplies historical insights: It offers insights into patterns of drug use over time, not just recent incidents.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent usage: Drugs typically become traceable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be pricier than other testing options.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the presence of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Despite often being termed "hair follicle tests", the procedure examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
