Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle testing services in Longs, South Carolina. Whether you require a drug or alcohol hair test, our specialty lies in hair testing, backed by a nationwide network of facilities capable of conducting hair analyses. Hair from the crown or body, measuring 1.5 to 2 inches, is typically used to detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or for specialized testing options.

In recent years, there has been a growing trend in drug testing methods pointing towards hair follicle tests. Many entities, including employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts, are opting for hair tests over conventional urine tests. This method is favored by zero-tolerance employers, court systems, and probation programs. Its key advantage is an extended detection window, usually up to 90 days, with supervised sample collection and resistance to tampering. However, for detecting recent drug use within a 5-day window, urine tests still maintain superior accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and drug usage by embedding biomarkers within the strands' structure as they grow. When collected near the scalp, hair offers an approximate 3-month timeframe for detecting alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the diameter of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for testing. For EtG, supplementary tests, or those exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for precise weighing of the specimen. If scalp hair isn't accessible, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. Scalp hair refers exclusively to head hair, whereas body hair includes other types such as facial or axillary.

Process Overview

There are four primary phases in the lab processing of a drug test outcome: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the first processing of a sample within a lab's framework. This step ensures that the sample is appropriately sealed and shipped, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any remaining data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs an initial rapid assessment for substance abuse. Although Screening is a budget-friendly approach to discount drug use in most samples, a confirmed positive screen is required for legal admissibility. Samples appearing positive during Screening necessitate a further confirmation step.

If a sample tests positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the primary sample for the Extraction phase. This phase involves retracting drugs from hair at considerably lower levels compared to methods like urine or oral fluid, explaining why hair drug testing presents the most complex methodology.

Confirmation of any screening-positive outcome is executed with GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are cleansed prior to confirmation when necessary. The comprehensive lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and aligns with ISO / IEC 17025 specifications.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests detect drug consumption up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection periods.
  • Hard to manipulate: Hair drug tests are very challenging to cheat, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers usage history: It outlines a drug use pattern over time, rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be pricier than alternative methods.
  • Varied outcomes: Factors such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can impact metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Despite sometimes being called "hair follicle tests", this test examines the hair strand, not the scalp's hair follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
