Accredited Drug Testing delivers extensive hair follicle drug assessments right in Nixons Crossroads, SC. If a hair drug or alcohol examination is necessary, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair testing, with centers across the country, including every city. Typically, a minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is adequate. Hair tests can be tailored for drug, alcohol/ETG, and more diversified testing needs.

Recently, conducting drug tests often involves hair follicle analyses. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts increasingly favor hair over standard urine tests. Hair follicle tests suit zero-tolerance employers, courts, and probation situations. The significant advantage is a longer drug detection window up to 90 days, collected through a supervised collection, making it hard to falsify. Yet, urine tests remain superior for detecting recent drug use within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Utilizing hair testing has emerged as an effective approach for identifying drug and alcohol usage. The hair possesses the ability to maintain a prolonged record of alcohol and other drugs by embedding biomarkers within the strands. When obtained near the scalp, hair can present a detection timeframe of up to roughly 3 months for alcohol and other drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches composed of around 200 hair strands (approximately the width of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the perfect quantity for screening and confirming. For EtG, additional tests, and/or analysis exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advised. Measuring the specimen on a jeweler’s scale is recommended. In the absence of scalp hair, a similar quantity of body hair can be utilized. When referencing head hair, it pertains only to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory analysis of a drug test result involves four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial incorporation of a sample into the laboratory’s system. This process includes checking that the sample is correctly sealed and transported, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any further data input absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of an initial rapid assessment for drug abuse. While Screening is an economical method to rule out drug use for the majority of samples, a positive screen must be confirmed to be valid in court. Samples with a presumptive positive in Screening require secondary confirmation.

If a sample is presumptively positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. This phase involves extracting drugs from hair at a significantly lower concentration compared to alternative methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is considered the most complex methodology.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is conducted under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Hindrance to cheating: It is exceedingly difficult to circumvent a hair drug test, leading to more precise results.
  • Offers historical insight: It can reveal a pattern of drug utilization over time, not merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent use: It requires approximately 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be costlier than other drug testing methodologies.
  • Variability in results: Elements such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Often labeled as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is done on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Nixons Crossroads, SC, hair follicle testing outperforms traditional urine tests thanks to superior detection accuracy and reliability. Hair tests boast a more extended detection period, offering detailed insights into substance use patterns over time. Unlike urine tests, hair testing resists short-term cleansing attempts, ensuring accurate results even weeks after drug use.

Hair tests are better than urine testing as they reduce false negatives and maintain integrity throughout the process. Employers benefit from the broader scope of hair testing, ensuring compliance with strict drug-free policies. The practicality of hair testing in diverse settings underscores its advantage over traditional urine methods.

Extended Detection Window

The extended detection window of hair follicle testing in Nixons Crossroads, SC, provides an in-depth view of an individual's substance history over 90 days. This longevity far exceeds the usual timeframe for detecting drug use in other testing methods. Employers gain a comprehensive understanding of an applicant's or employee's behavior, aiding in informed decision-making.

This extended period offers valuable insights for businesses seeking to maintain a safe and compliant work environment. The ability to trace substance usage back several months is a critical advantage, allowing organizations to uphold high standards and take necessary measures for corrective action where necessary.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Nixons Crossroads, SC, the tamper-resistant nature of hair follicle testing significantly reduces the risk of sample adulteration. Unlike other testing techniques, it provides results that are reliable and beyond question. This method's robust design ensures that the integrity of the test is preserved from collection to analysis, maintaining confidence throughout the process.

Hair follicle tests offer peace of mind thanks to their rigorous collection and analysis protocol. The authenticity of the test results reinforces trust among employers and institutions relying on accurate substance use detection. This testing method exemplifies reliability and integrity in drug testing practices.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
