Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Springdale, South Carolina. Specializing in hair testing, Accredited Drug Testing provides convenient access to hair drug or alcohol tests with centers nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body are needed. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer other tailored options.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests have become a preferred method for drug screening. Many employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals choose hair tests over traditional urine tests. Organizations with zero-tolerance policies, probation cases, and court mandates favor hair tests for their longer detection window—up to 90 days—collected under observation, and difficulty to alter results. However, for detecting recent (within 5 days) drug use, urine tests remain more effective.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective means for identifying use of drugs and alcohol. Hair archives a prolonged history of these substances by capturing biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When cut near the scalp, hair offers nearly a three-month detection span for alcohol and drug usage. The collection of hair is straightforward, with minimal risk of tampering, and it is easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch section consisting of around 200 hair strands (similar in thickness to a #2 pencil) taken closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, ideally suited for testing and validation. If conducting EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, it is advisable to have 150mg of the sample. For accuracy, weigh the sample using a jeweler's scale. In the absence of scalp hair, a comparable quantity of body hair can be used. When head hair is mentioned, it specifically refers to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary procedures in processing a drug test result at the lab are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step of integrating a sample into the lab's system. This step verifies proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any required data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides a preliminary check for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is an economical method to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive result necessitates confirmation for court admissibility. Any samples with a presumptive positive result in Screening require further confirmation.

If Screening indicates a presumptive positive, additional hair is extracted from the sample and processed for Extraction. At this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at considerably lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug testing among the most challenging methodologies to execute.

Confirmation of any positive Screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Samples with presumptive positive results undergo washing before Confirmation as required. The entire lab procedure, spanning Accessioning to Confirmation, undergoes review per both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can recognize drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: Hair drug tests are extremely tough to trick, leading to heightened result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insights: It provides data about a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent use: Drugs take around 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests cost more than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and individual growth variations might influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Despite being commonly called "hair follicle tests", the test targets the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair testing can have significant advantages over conventional urine tests, particularly in Springdale, SC. While urine tests detect recent drug use, hair follicle tests provide a broader detection window, offering a more comprehensive understanding of an individual's drug use history.

Benefits of hair follicle over urine tests lie in its reliability and ability to trace drugs over a more extended period. This makes hair testing a preferable choice for employers aiming to maintain a drug-free environment.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
