Located in White Oak, South Carolina, Accredited Drug Testing provides full-scale hair follicle drug assessments. Should you require hair drug or alcohol evaluations, our expertise in this area is unmatched, with national centers ready to carry out these tests. Hair lengths of 1.5 to 2 inches on the scalp or body are generally needed. Our hair analyses cover drugs, alcohol/ETG, and tailor-made testing solutions.

The use of hair follicle drug assessments has seen a rise recently as a go-to method for drug testing. Nowadays, hair drug evaluations are preferred by many employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts over standard urine tests. Utilized by organizations with strict no-drug policies and legal settings, these tests provide a significant benefit, as they detect drug use efficiently over a span of 90 days, have monitored collection procedures, and present high resistance to cheating. Yet, for identifying recent drug use within five days, urinalysis remains highly effective.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing now stands out as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair archives a prolonged record of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers in the strands of the hair as it grows. When procured near the scalp, hair can indicate alcohol and drug use for up to about three months. Hair is easy to collect, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and convenient for transport.

A 1.5-inch sample consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (about the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal sample size for screening and verification. For EtG, add-on tests, and/or analyses exceeding 10 panels, a specimen amount of 150mg is advised. We recommend assessing the sample's weight using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not accessible, a comparable quantity of body hair is acceptable. When mentioning head hair, we are specifically indicating scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four key steps in the lab processing of a drug test outcome: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the preliminary integration of a sample into the lab’s system. This encompasses ensuring the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and conducting any supplementary data entry not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening conducts an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug usage in the majority of samples, a positive result from Screening must be validated to be accepted in a legal setting. Any samples presenting presumptive positivity in Screening mandate a further confirmation.

If a sample is deemed presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen and prepared for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are retrieved from hair at significantly reduced concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral liquid), rendering hair drug screening the most intricate methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can identify drug use up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests with a reduced detection timeframe.
  • Challenging to deceive: It is arduous to deceive a hair drug test, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: It provides a timeline of drug use across an extended period, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Drugs require approximately 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is typically pricier than alternative drug testing approaches.
  • Discrepancies in results: Elements like hair color and personal hair growth disparities can impact drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Though commonly called "hair follicle tests", the examination analyzes the hair strand rather than the hair follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
