Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Alpha, Tennessee. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing specializes in hair testing and operates centers nationwide equipped to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is needed from your head, though body hair can be tested as well. Hair follicle tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for various testing options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become more prevalent as a method for conducting drug tests. Many employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts favor hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. These tests are especially valued by employers with zero-tolerance policies, legal courts, and probation officers. A key advantage of hair follicle tests is their 90-day detection window, collected under supervision, and their resistance to tampering. Nonetheless, for substances used in the past 5 days, urine tests still offer greater accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is widely regarded as an effective technique for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair strands capture biomarkers within their fibers, offering an extended timeline of substance use. When taken near the scalp, hair can reveal up to a three-month usage history for drugs and alcohol. Collecting hair is straightforward, resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of approximately 200 strands (roughly the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is optimum for both screening and confirmation tests. For tests like EtG, additional panels, or those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advisable. We suggest measuring the hair sample with a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is insufficient, comparable body hair can substitute. When we mention head hair, it specifically denotes scalp hair, while body hair encompasses other types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory handling of a drug test result comprises four primary phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the initial integration of a sample into a lab's workflow. This step ensures the sample was sealed and transported correctly, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and includes any extra data entry that an electronic chain of custody might not cover.

Screening involves a preliminary assessment for potential drug use. Although it's a cost-saving approach to dismiss drug use in most samples, a positive screen must undergo confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples showing presumptive positives during Screening must have a follow-up confirmation.

For presumptively positive samples in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction phase. Here, hair releases drugs at markedly lower levels compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), underscoring why hair drug analysis is among the toughest techniques to conduct.

Following a positive screening result, Confirmation is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, any samples showing presumptive positives are cleansed as necessary. The entire process from Accessioning through Confirmation undergoes evaluation under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation, as well as alignment with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests reveal drug use spanning up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that possess a shorter detection timeline.
  • Difficult to circumvent: Cheating in hair drug tests is extremely challenging, ensuring more reliable outcomes.
  • Offers historical insights: It presents a pattern of substance use over time, rather than just contemporary consumption.

Limitations:

  • Can't indicate recent use: There is a 5-7 day period needed for drugs to become discernible in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing generally incurs higher costs compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence the levels of drug metabolites found in the hair.

Note: Despite being termed as "hair follicle tests", these tests actually examine the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
