In Gibson, Tennessee, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug evaluations. If you require testing for drugs or alcohol through hair analysis, our expertise lies in this method, with facilities available in every city across the nation. Having 1.5 to 2 inches of hair, typically at the head's crown or elsewhere on the body, is necessary for most analyses. Our hair tests can assess drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized hair testing needs.

Recently, drug testing methods more often include hair follicle tests. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse professionals now favor hair tests over traditional urine tests. These tests are utilized by organizations adhering to strict anti-drug policies, legal courts, and probationary systems. The key advantage of hair tests lies in their prolonged detection window, which usually extends up to 90 days during an observed collection, making them highly tamper-resistant. However, urine tests remain most accurate for detecting recent drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has gained recognition as a valuable resource for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and drug intake by embedding biomarkers within its fibers as the hair grows. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer nearly a three-month timeframe for detecting alcohol and other substances. Hair is easy to gather, relatively tough to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of approximately 200 strands of hair (equivalent to the width of a #2 pencil), near the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for analysis and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler's scale for weighing the specimen. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. "Head hair" refers exclusively to scalp hair. "Body hair" encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four major steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes integrating a sample into a laboratory system initially. This step ensures the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any necessary data entry absent in the electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers a preliminary check for illicit drugs. Though Screening provides a cost-effective method to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation to be legally valid. Samples that yield a presumptive positive in Screening necessitate secondary validation.

If a sample is identified as presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the sample for the Extraction phase. In this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at lower concentrations compared to other testing methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which renders hair drug screening the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of all positive screening outcomes is achieved using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples receive a wash before confirmation as necessary. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning through Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair category and ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection range: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, surpassing the shorter range of urine tests.
  • Challenging to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is highly improbable, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Trend data: It provides a chronology of drug use over time, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect very recent use: It generally takes around 5-7 days for drugs to be identifiable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair pigmentation and other variations in hair growth may influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Despite the common term "hair follicle tests", the actual test evaluates the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing provides superior benefits over traditional urine tests in Gibson, TN. While urine tests can detect recent drug use, hair tests offer extensive detection capabilities, identifying substance use over a 90-day period. This longer window gives employers a better understanding of an individual's drug history, thus enhancing the effectiveness of employment screenings.

The reliability of hair testing is further emphasized by its resistance to manipulation. Unlike urine tests, which are more susceptible to tampering, hair tests provide accurate and secure testing options, making them the preferred choice for organizations enforcing strict drug policies.

Extended Detection Window

For employers in Gibson, TN, hair follicle testing offers an extended detection window, making it an invaluable tool in screening employees or applicants. This method allows for the identification of drug use over the past 90 days, providing a more comprehensive account of an individual's substance history compared to other methods with shorter detection spans.

This notable feature of hair testing enables employers to evaluate an employee's substance use accurately, ensuring that they maintain a drug-free workplace. The extended detection period surpasses traditional testing methods, contributing to more informed decision-making processes.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle tests conducted in Gibson, TN, significantly minimize the potential for sample manipulation, offering robust and consistent results. This method is less vulnerable to tampering compared to other testing options, ensuring the integrity of the sample and the reliability of the test outcome.

This resistance to adulteration makes hair testing an excellent option for organizations seeking effective, trustworthy drug testing. Employers can rely on the untampered results, enhancing the overall credibility and efficiency of their substance-related policies.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
