Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screenings in Copperton, Utah. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise in hair tests is nationwide, covering all cities with centers capable of conducting these tests. Most scenarios need 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair. These samples can be assessed for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored hair testing solutions.

Today, drug testing practices increasingly incorporate hair follicle assessments. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts prefer hair tests to standard urine analyses. Zero-tolerance employers, judiciary systems, and probationers use hair tests due to the longer detection timeframe—up to 90 days—which employs an observed collection method, easing fraudulence concerns. Nonetheless, urine tests remain best for detecting immediate drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as an effective method for detecting the use of drugs and alcohol. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and drug usage by trapping biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When taken near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of about 3 months for both alcohol and other substances. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and convenient for shipping.

A 1.5-inch section of approximately 200 hair strands (equivalent to the thickness of a #2 pencil) close to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the ideal quantity for screening and validation. For EtG, additional tests, or when testing more than 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We suggest weighing the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, a similar quantity of body hair should be collected. In this context, head hair refers only to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other types like facial or axillary hair.

Process Overview

The primary stages of processing a laboratory drug test are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial integration of a sample into a lab’s system. This step includes checking that the sample was sealed and shipped correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and filling out any additional data entry if an electronic chain of custody system was not used.

Screening is a preliminary check for drugs of abuse. While it is an economical method to exclude drug use in the majority of samples, a positive result from Screening requires confirmation to be valid in legal contexts. Samples that test positive during Screening need a subsequent confirmation.

During Screening, if a sample is thought to be positive, additional hair is taken from the original specimen for Extraction. This phase involves extracting drugs from hair at a concentration lower than other techniques (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging method to conduct.

Any positive results from the initial Screening require Confirmation using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that test presumptively positive are washed before confirmation as necessary. The overall lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated in alignment with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can detect drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Hard to evade: Cheating on a hair drug test is quite challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: It reveals a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Detection in hair takes about 5-7 days post-drug use.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing typically costs more than other testing strategies.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and individual growth differences can impact the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis is performed on the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
