Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in Taylorsville, Utah. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair examinations, with testing facilities available nationwide. Typically, at least 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body can be used. Hair testing can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized testing needs.

Recently, the hair follicle drug test has become a more common method for drug testing. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse professionals now prefer hair drug testing over traditional urine tests. This method is favored by employers with strict no-drug policies, judicial bodies, and probation offices. One significant advantage is its extended detection window, often up to 90 days, along with its observed collection process, making it hard to manipulate. Nonetheless, urine tests remain the go-to for detecting recent drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as a potent means to identify drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a prolonged record of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair shaft. When obtained near the scalp, hair can reveal up to a 3-month detection period for alcohol and other substances. Hair is easy to collect, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of about 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for testing and confirmation. For EtG, additional testing, and/or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of the sample is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale is recommended for weighing the sample. If scalp hair is unobtainable, an equivalent portion of body hair may be used. When discussing head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four critical stages in the laboratory processing of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial handling of a sample into a laboratory’s database. This process verifies that the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any ancillary data not covered by an electronic chain of custody protocol.

Screening entails an initial rapid check for substances of abuse. While Screening provides a cost-efficient means to eliminate drug use for most samples, a positive result requires confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples that are presumptively positive during Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the primary specimen for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in other techniques (ex. urine or oral fluid), making hair drug analysis the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result employs GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as needed. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is conducted in compliance with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug analyses can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a briefer detection window.
  • Hard to manipulate: Altering hair drug outcomes is exceedingly challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Yields historical insight: Offers a timeline of substance use over a duration, not merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent usage: Drugs take around 5-7 days to manifest in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug analyses are typically more costly than alternative testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and personal hair growth variations can influence drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: Although frequently labeled as "hair follicle tests," the actual analysis targets the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
