Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Millcreek, Utah. For those requiring hair drug or alcohol testing, this specialty is available at numerous centers nationwide. Hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches on the crown or body is typically required. Hair analyses can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or accommodate custom testing needs.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing's popularity has grown. A wide array of employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse specialists prioritize hair tests over traditional urine screenings. Zero-tolerance companies, legal settings, and probation requirements favor hair follicle tests due to prolonged detection, extending up to 90 days. While effective for recent usage within 5 days, urine tests remain the standard.

What it is, How it works

The recognition of hair testing as a crucial means for identifying alcohol and drug consumption has grown. Hair serves as a comprehensive timeline of alcohol and drug usage by embedding biomarkers within the strands during the hair's growth. A sample taken near the scalp can offer up to a 90-day detection period for drugs and alcohol. Collecting hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

Gathering a 1.5-inch portion consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (similar in thickness to a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields approximately 100mg of hair, which is perfect for evaluation and validation. For EtG, other additions, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, it's advised to have 150mg. Utilizing a jeweler's scale for accuracy is recommended. If scalp hair is unavailable, equivalent body hair can be used. When referring to head hair, we mean only scalp hair, while body hair encompasses other forms like facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The primary phases in lab processing for a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample is initially processed into the lab's system. This phase ensures the sample’s proper sealing and shipment, assigns a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes additional data inputs absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening acts as a quick preliminary examination for drug misuse. Although it’s a budget-friendly approach to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive result in Screening must undergo confirmation to be legally admissible. Samples that are iffy positives in Screening must undergo further confirmation.

In the event of a presumptively positive outcome in Screening, more hair from the initial sample is prepared for Extraction. This stage isolates drugs from hair at much lower concentrations than in other test methods (e.g., urine, saliva), which makes hair drug testing one of the challenging methodologies.

Positive Screening findings are confirmed through methods like GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, all preliminary positive samples are cleaned if needed. The complete lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is assessed following both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and ISO / IEC 17025 standard accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug exams track drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter tracking span.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely tough, enhancing result reliability.
  • Provides historical data: It highlights a drug use trend over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs become noticeable in hair only after about 5-7 days.
  • Cost: Hair drug examinations generally cost more than other drug testing options.
  • Variations in results: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth diversity can influence the drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Despite being commonly called "hair follicle tests", the assessment actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle under the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
