Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Union, Utah. Whether it's for drug or alcohol analysis, our specialty in hair testing is supported by centers nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair, either from the head or body, is needed for reliable results. Our tests cover drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other customizable options.

Recently, the implementation of hair follicle drug tests has grown, with many employers, courts, and substance abuse experts preferring it over traditional urine tests. This method supports zero-tolerance drug policies, court requirements, and probation cases. A standout benefit of hair testing is the extended detection window, usually up to 90 days, with a supervised collection that minimizes tampering. For detecting recent drug use, urine tests remain the most effective, especially within the initial 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Utilizing hair analysis is increasingly recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and drugs through biomarkers within the hair’s fibers as it grows. When taken from near the scalp, hair can offer an approximate 3-month detection period for these substances. Hair is straightforward to collect, relatively tamper-proof, and simple to transport.

A hair sample measuring 1.5 inches with roughly 200 strands (similar in thickness to a #2 pencil) from the scalp will provide 100mg, which is the optimal sample size for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or panels exceeding 10, a 150mg specimen is advisable. It’s suggested to weigh the specimen using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair can’t be collected, a comparable amount of body hair is an alternative. When we mention head hair, we specify only scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory drug testing process involves four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step of processing a sample into the lab's system. This involves ensuring the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and handling any additional data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial rapid assessment for abuse substances. Though Screening is an economical way to dismiss drug use in most samples, any positive results must be verified for court admittance. Samples with presumptive positive results in Screening must have secondary verification.

For samples with presumptive positives in Screening, more hair is drawn from the original sample for Extraction. This phase involves extracting drugs from hair at concentrations significantly lower than in other methods (like urine or oral fluid), highlighting the challenges of hair drug screening.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS confirm any positive screening findings. Presumptively positive samples are washed before confirmation as required. The full laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standard and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which detect drugs for a shorter duration.
  • Difficulty to cheat: The challenging nature of cheating a hair drug test results in more reliable outcomes.
  • Provides historical data: It yields a record of drug consumption patterns over time, rather than mere recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become detectable in the hair.
  • Cost: Generally, hair drug tests are costlier compared to other drug testing methods.
  • Variations in results: Factors like hair color and unique variations in hair growth can impact drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: The test often called a "hair follicle test" actually evaluates the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Union, UT, hair follicle testing significantly outshines urine testing in terms of reliability and scope. Benefits of Hair Testing: It provides a longer detection window while resisting most cheating attempts. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
