Accredited Drug Testing brings comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services to West Bountiful, Utah. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, our expertise in hair testing ensures availability in testing centers across all American cities that can administer a hair test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or any body hair may be used. Hair tests can be tailored to detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific testing needs.

Recently, drug testing protocols have increasingly incorporated hair follicle drug tests. Both employers and legal authorities, along with Substance Abuse experts, are opting for hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle drug assessments are employed by organizations with zero-tolerance drug policies, judicial systems, and probationary arrangements. Major advantages include a prolonged detection window of up to 90 days with transparent collection procedures, making it exceptionally difficult to tamper with. Nonetheless, urine tests remain more accurate for identifying drug use within the past five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as an effective means of uncovering drug and alcohol consumption. It offers a comprehensive timeline of substance use by preserving biomarkers within the fibers of emergent hair strands. When sourced near the scalp, hair can reflect a drug and alcohol testing period of up to around three months. Collection of hair is straightforward, tampering is relatively challenging, and it’s uncomplicated to send out for testing.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with approximately 200 hairs (roughly the diameter of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, ideal for screening and confirmation procedures. For add-ons like EtG, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is ideal. We suggest employing a jeweler’s scale for weighing. If scalp hair is not an option, the same quantity of body hair can be substituted. Referencing head hair pertains exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (i.e., facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory process for a drug test result comprises four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning kicks off with the preliminary processing of the sample into a lab’s system. This phase ensures that the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any supplementary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening conducts a preliminary swift assessment for drugs of abuse. It is a cost-effective method to discount drug use on most samples; however, a positive result requires confirmation to be legally admissible. Samples that test presumptively positive in Screening do necessitate further confirmation.

Should a sample yield a presumptive positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for preparation in the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug screening a challenging methodology.

Any positive result in Screening undergoes Confirmation through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are appropriately washed before confirmation. The whole lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is scrutinized under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation as well as accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug tests can identify drug use extending up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which provide a shorter span.
  • Fraud resistance: The rigorous nature of a hair drug test makes it challenging to deceive, hence ensuring accurate results.
  • Tracks historical consumption patterns: It delineates a timeline of drug use across an extended duration, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Limited in recent use detection: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expensive: Compared to other testing methods, hair drug tests tend to be pricier.
  • Result variability: External factors such as hair color and individual growth rates can influence the drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the procedure evaluates the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In West Bountiful, UT, hair follicle testing is increasingly favored over traditional urine tests. Why? The superior detection accuracy in determining past drug usage is unmatched. Hair testing offers excellent reliability, as it identifies a wider range of substances consumed over a longer timespan. Compare this to urine testing, which can only detect recent use for 1-5 days. The hair test is invaluable for workplaces aiming to uphold stringent drug-free environments.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in West Bountiful, UT, offers a prolonged detection window for drug use. Where traditional methods capture recent use, hair tests reveal substance use for up to 90 days. This extended look-back period gives employers an extensive view of an employee or applicant's drug use history, which is vital in evaluating their suitability for maintaining a drug-free work environment.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In West Bountiful, UT, hair follicle testing stands out for its tamper-resistant nature. The reliability of such tests is significantly high because it's nearly immune to adulteration tactics common in other testing methods. The accuracy and integrity they provide make them a trusted option for those requiring indubitable results, ensuring a safer, more trustworthy hiring and work environment.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
