Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in Whitingham, Vermont. For anyone requiring a hair-based drug or alcohol test, we at Accredited Drug Testing excel in this area and have facilities across all U.S. cities to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is needed, and the analysis can focus on drugs, alcohol/ETG, or custom options.

Over the years, hair follicle drug tests have become a popular method for evaluating drug use. A growing number of employers, legal authorities, and Substance Abuse professionals are opting for hair tests over urine tests. These tests are favored by employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, the legal system, and those on probation. The main advantage is its extended detection period, which can last up to 90 days, conducted under observation, minimizing the chance of tampering. Yet, for detecting recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain the most reliable.

What it is, How it works

Hair tests are recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a comprehensive timeline of substance intake by capturing biomarkers in the strands of growing hair. Collected near the scalp, it can offer a detection period of up to roughly three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair sampling is straightforward, resistant to tampering, and convenient for shipping.

A hair sample measuring 1.5 inches with around 200 strands (about the width of a #2 pencil) cut close to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, an optimal sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding ten, 150mg of the specimen is suggested. The use of a jeweler’s scale is recommended for weighing the sample. If scalp hair isn't available, a corresponding amount of body hair can be collected. When mentioning head hair, it refers exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for a drug test result encompasses four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes entering a sample into the lab’s system. This step ensures the sample was adequately sealed and dispatched, allocates a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional data entry not provided electronically.

Screening serves as a preliminary check for drugs of abuse. Despite its cost-effectiveness for eliminating drug use on most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples with presumptive positives in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

If a sample screens presumptively positive, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for Extraction. This step retrieves drugs from hair at a significantly lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing a challenging methodology.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as required. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is inspected by CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection span.
  • Hard to falsify: Cheating on a hair drug test is exceedingly challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historically rich data: It can depict a timeline of drug use over an extended period, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect immediate use: Drugs become noticeable in hair around 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Differences in hair color and personal hair growth rates can impact drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand, not the underlying follicle.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Whitingham, VT
Hair follicle testing offers superior detection capabilities compared to traditional urine tests. With the ability to identify drug usage over an extended period, it ensures more accurate and dependable results.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
