Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Toms Brook, Virginia. Specializing in hair drug and alcohol tests, we have facilities in cities across the nation ready to conduct your hair test. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown of your head or other body parts is needed. Our hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer other tailored testing options.

Recently, hair follicle testing has become a preferred method for drug tests. Many organizations, legal bodies, and addiction professionals now favor this over urine tests. Hair follicle tests are aligned with zero-tolerance policies at workplaces and are mandated in certain legal scenarios. They provide a significant advantage with a 90-day detection span, are observed, and are hard to tamper with. Nonetheless, urine tests remain the go-to option for detecting drug use in the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a potent means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It offers a long-term record by encapsulating biomarkers within the fibers of growing hair strands. By collecting samples near the scalp, hair can offer up to a roughly 3-month detection period for substances. It's easy to collect, somewhat resistant to tampering, and convenient for shipping.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with about 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp provides 100mg of hair, the perfect amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, a sample of 150mg is preferred. We advise measuring it with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is inaccessible, an equivalent amount of body hair can be collected. When discussing head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key steps in processing a drug test result in the lab include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails initially integrating a sample into a laboratory’s system. This step involves ensuring the sample's proper sealing and shipping, assigning it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and performing any additional data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides a preliminary check for drugs of abuse. Although it serves as a cost-effective method to dismiss drug use in most samples, positive screens must be confirmed for courtroom admissibility. Any samples presumed positive during Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

If a sample is indicated positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the original specimen for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening the most challenging methodology.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is performed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptively positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as required. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is vetted under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can discover drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection span.
  • Hard to manipulate: It's very hard to falsify a hair drug test, increasing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: It can show a pattern of drug use over a period, not just recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to manifest in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth divergences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: While often termed as "hair follicle tests," the analysis targets the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Toms Brook, VA, hair follicle tests offer clear advantages over standard urine tests. Superior detection periods reveal drug use within the past 90 days, compared to a much shorter window for urine samples.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
